Eclavdra, priestess of ???

In Artifact of Evil (by the great Gygax himself) it is mentioned that Eclavdra, the drow priestess follows Graz'zt and serves an emissary between him and his loving son, Iuz. In the novel she relays information between the two and seeks to exploit the negotiations to her own ends as well.

In the Epic Level Handbook, Eclavdra is said to be the "perfect instrument of Lolth's will." Apparently I missed that atonement spell.

The ELH wouldn't worry me too much, but it seems she is also referenced in one of the recent Dungeon magazine adventures (the conclusion to the Istivin: City of Shadows mini-campaign). In it, she is also referenced as a servant of Lolth. And I'm pretty sure Erik Mona gets his stuff right (although he didn't author the mod and it is conceivable that it slipped his notice).

When did this happen?

In the Iuz the evil, this was all tied together. Ecalvdra once worshipped the EEE as indicated in the D series of modules. After she was defeated, she vowed to return her worship to Lolth and made an arrangement with the Spider Queen to serve as an ambassador to Iuz as a means of repenting. During this time, Lolth and Graz'zt had arrangments as well, and Eclavdra was acting as an agent of Graz'zt with Lolth's permission.

Since then, Eclavdra has returned to Erelhei-Cinlu and reestablished herself in House Eilserv. Her current endeavors are centralized around becoming High Priestess to Lolth.

I don't remember off-hand, but wasn't there also some reference to Eclavdra and the politics of House Eilserv in Dragon #298? It seems to me that there was.

Yep, that was the second paragraph in my previous post, there's a bit more detail in the magazine than what I presented. Basically, there's a current priestess from another house (Tormtor I beleive), and Eclavdra is competing or had competed against her for the position of High Preistess. Can't remember offhand though. If you can grab a copy of Dragon #298, it presents an excellent summary of all of this and lots more other useful information.

The Gygax version is a little different. After her original plans with the EEG were wrecked, desperate for power, Eclavdra turned to Graz'zt. She continued her war civil against the drow. Graz'zt granted her immunity to spider venom, and spiders that bit her would die. No love for Lolth or her beloved spiders there. I think Iuz the Evil took a much too basic, 'she's a drow, let's tie her to Lolth approach', and that's the version that's stuck in th official products.

Actually, the version I recall gave a much more complicated explanation in regards to her serving Lolth and Graz'zt. And personally, I like the idea of her atoning for her blasphemy.

IMHO, I'd stick with ScottyG's version of events, which I seem to recall as well. Having her come back in the Lolth fold doesn't seem all that exciting in the long run and is likely a gloss over (as ScottyG alluded to). Besides, I'd think that atoning to a demon would be much more painful and demeaning than finding oneself serving as a representative. Not to mention the fact that Eclavdra could likely be easily replaced.

It seems much more plausible, IMC anyway, to play out the chaotic evil aspects of individuals first by having her serve a rival demon. Much more twisted and variation is the spice of any campaign!!!

That issue of Dragon #298 is available as a PDF from Paizo's site. Anyone interested in the current state of the Vault of the Drow and/or Eclavdra should check it out.
