#1bastrakApr 11, 2005 9:33:29 | I have just had near mint copies of the following 1st Ed UK series modules come into my clutches. Given they were published in 1984-85 I'd expect them to be set in Greyhawk, however there is no obvious Greyhawk content and it looks like they have a generic setting. Does anyone know if there is any Greyhawk background behind any of these modules? UK4 When a Star Falls UK5 Eye of the Serpent UK6 All that Glitters... UK7 Dark Clouds gather. Thanks. |
#2zombiegleemaxApr 11, 2005 11:01:57 | After 1982 or 1983, generic AD&D modules stopped being set in Greyhawk and were set in generic worlds. Only the WG modules were specifically set in GH. R.A. |

I also bought When a Star Falls, when it first came out. To me that felt easily compatible with Greyhawk (I think I set it in the Kron Hills), indeed as much as the Basic Set modules did. There was something about the modules from the early '80s that seemed to fit 'Hawk style no matter how generic the setting.. |

I'll have to dig out the module and re-read it because I remember being disappointed with it in that regard (but can't remember exactly why I was disappointed anymore). |

Quite possibly for the same reason that I was disappointed - it didn't expand Greyhawk in any way, and although it 'could' fit the setting, it would have been a better piece of work had it been specific and actually developped an area which was ripe for it IMO |

Not an accurate statement, I am afraid. UK1 (Beyond the Crystal Cave), UK2 (The Sentinel), and UK3 (The Gauntlet) were all set in GH. I don't remember the exact location of UK1 but UK2/3 (a two parts module) were set on the border of the Hold of the Sea Princes. |
#7max_writerApr 12, 2005 11:08:47 | UK2 (The Sentinal) and UK3 (The Gauntlet) were set in the Duchy of Berghof, just south of the Sea Princes. Both were published in 1983. |
#8zombiegleemaxApr 12, 2005 11:44:58 | Not an accurate statement, I am afraid. I said after 82/83. See what Max said in the previous post. The modules originally asked about weren't the early U/UK modules, but rather the ones published after TSR went 'generic'. R.A. |
#9MortepierreApr 13, 2005 1:42:46 | UK7 Dark Clouds gather That module just begs to be set in the Rakers with its fanatical Pale-like priest. |
#10bastrakApr 13, 2005 7:42:03 | Thanks for the replies. I've already got UK1 to UK3, which is another reason I hoped UK4-7 might have some Greyhawk content hiding within them. Guess my initial impression that there was no Greyhawk content in them and that the settings were generic was unfortunately right. |
#11max_writerApr 13, 2005 10:59:41 | I ran Dark Clouds Gather in the mountains between the Snow and Ice Barbarians (name escapes me). The players had a great time with it. Wonderful module. I placed Eye of the Serpent in the Barrier Peaks (I believe) just west of the Duchy of Geoff (before the Greyhawk Wars). |
#12ffangh_kyrApr 16, 2005 15:53:36 | I placed Eye of the Serpent in the Barrier Peaks (I believe) just west of the Duchy of Geoff (before the Greyhawk Wars). In my first AD&D-campaign (a one-on-one) I used "Eye of the Serpent", to learn being a DM in AD&D with the player learning his part at the same time (we both came from D&D). UK5 is exeptionally well suited for this purpose and truly hooked us on AD&D. As opposed to Max_Writer I set the adventure about 100 miles sout-by-southeast of Veluna City, where the Lortmils are close to a smallish forest. Thereby the adventure map in UK5 was matched with the Greyhawk map, as well as being close to the party's starting location Veluna City (I gave them a generic "theres a dungeon seven days journey down the road" adventure hook and had them swept away by the rocs on said road). |
