#1zombiegleemaxApr 22, 2005 14:37:10 | I'm sure this is old news by now, but I haven't been able to find any webpages or anything that point it out specifically, so here you go - Has anyone ever noticed the similarity between the box art for Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (released for the NES in 1988) and the cover art for the original I6 Ravenloft (released in 1986)? They're nearly identical. Weird eh? I'm surprised there was never a legal dispute about this. |
#2humanbingMay 06, 2005 10:10:12 | Anybody played the PC game Thief 2? In it, a priest named Karras has dominion over an evil cult that controls the city. Karras looks very similar to Yagno Petrovna. They both have thin faces and wear a similar type of unusual headgear. I will post screenshots when I get them. |

#4zombiegleemaxJul 28, 2005 1:34:54 | I'm sure this is old news by now, but I haven't been able to find any webpages or anything that point it out specifically, so here you go - damn i have th box, and have look at that cover a lot of times and i have not figured that... you are right its like the ravenloft cover was the first aprt and the Castlevania II, was the second after Sthrahd just realices Simon Belmont is comming to meet him... geee i have been so blind. jeje thanks Montalve |
#5chaoslordsAug 01, 2005 20:56:16 | It doesn't surprise me. The artist that did the original Ravenloft art probably holds the rights to the artwork. Then Konami comes along and sees it, hires the artist to do the cover art for their game. By the way the Artist is Clyde Caldwell here is a couple of related websites. http://www.pen-paper.net/rpgdb.php?op=showcreator&creatorid=1059 http://www.clydecaldwell.com/ I looked but could not find out if Clyde did do the Castevania 2 cover art. |
#6zombiegleemaxAug 18, 2005 13:32:39 | The CVII artwork really doesn't look like Caldwell did it. I'm surprised I never noticed the blatant similarity, as I own both (well, House of Strahd instead of I6 proper, but I've seen I6's art quite often). |
#7zombiegleemaxAug 18, 2005 18:22:59 | LOL Similarity? It's a blatant rip-off! Mind you, it's kind of unsettling to look at after seeing the familiar Caldwell art for so many years and seeing the new one where Strahd is now looking directly at you. It's kind of like the painting of Vigo the Carpathian in Ghostbusters II. Now THAT was a creepy painting... More creepy than the actor who finally walked out of the painting at the end. |
#8fiery_overlordAug 20, 2005 16:56:59 | They say copyright infringement is the sincerest form of flattery... Wait, that isn't how the saying goes. Well anyway, thanks for the heads up, never noticed but I see what you are talking about. |
#9zombiegleemaxAug 25, 2005 18:25:57 | Looked at the picture again, Man is that ever unsettling. Mind you that would be really cool for a haunted house game for RL: A painting on the wall that was in one pose for so many years then suddenly, each day, the figure's head is looking in a different direction until one day, it bears a look of pure malevolent hatred that seems to be staring directly at the PCs no matter where in the room they're standing, kind of like watching the news and having the newscaster looking right at you no matter where in the room you are. Ack. goosebumps. |
#10zombiegleemaxAug 25, 2005 23:18:38 | mmm cool idea, seen it in statues with eyes looking at you (movies) or in the game where the newman began speaking to the main character. |
#11zombiegleemaxAug 26, 2005 15:25:54 | Great Scott! He's right! :OMG! Ditto. Quite shocking.... |
#12Matthew_L._MartinAug 27, 2005 19:47:07 | I'd note that some of the later CVII-related material--the European release, the kid's novel based on it--features only the bottom half of the art. I wonder if this had something to do with it. In any event, I noticed this years ago--although my exposure was to CVII first. In fact, it was the Castlevania games (as well as reading about old black & white horror/monster movies) that laid the foundation for my interest in Ravenloft. Matthew L. Martin |
#13darth_azalinSep 17, 2005 4:14:25 | My forum icon avatar has been over published almost anytime they need a vampire they use that. Hence in the roleplaying books (the ones that you have to use a d6) and then choose your path has this also for a cover. I believe that title is like Master of Ravenloft or something like it.. you play a 1-3 lvl priest/paladin walking around Strahds castle.. (how fun) |
#14zombiegleemaxSep 17, 2005 14:56:14 | well i own an spanish copy of said book, but i remember a quite different cover... also i remember a 15 level paladin wandering in the castle ready to save Tatiana... but hey that was quiete atime ago. |
