Mystara Riddles

I thought I'd try a trivia thread where a question is asked and the answer is from one of the many Mystara related products (I kinda stole the idea from a poem (lymric?) thread I saw a while ago).

Basically, a question is given and when someone answers it, they give the next question. Be creative and use any of the products related to mystara; gazetteers, almanacs, creature crucibles, adventures, Known World, Savage Coast, Hollow World... I think you get the idea. Anyway, if this is something that you might find fun, give it a shot.

I'll start with the first one.

I come from the planes of the Immortals and I'm 30 feet tall. I was brought to Mystara by elves. I do not travel anymore; in fact, I have now set my roots in a lovely clearing surrounded by mahogany woods. Truth be told, I am not even alive, yet inside of me lies Immortality.
WHAT am I?

A cookie for the first one to answer! But remember, the person who answers must give the next question!

answer is easy:
Tree of Life

next question:
Who am I? I live under the sea and send out my armies from there. Recently I found out that my mother is still alive and was mad about it.

answer is easy:
Tree of Life

Ah, not so easy I think, for I am not alive. Some may wish that I were alive but I never have been. I cannot create offspring, however I can create things that are not alive. Furthermore, I am unique and although I appear familiar, there is no other like me on Mystara.

Nice try lonewolf. Any other answers out there? The person who answers mine gets to do so without having to give a question.

Lonewolf's is the current question. Whoever gets this one gives the next question!

I'm at a loss, Joe, I must admit.

Especially by the lines:
"I was summoned to the first war of iron against bronze,
And to the highest seat of human wizardry."

It would seem it refers to SOMETHING and not to somebody, especially when it asks "What am I?"... am I on the right path?

When you say "I was there" you mean "I was physically in that place" or "in that timeframe I existed"?

Well Andrew, I had the BUrrowers in mind too, but when you write "I wait" (singular) and "my brethren far above" it's clear we're talking about a singular person who has a kin in the surface world, something the Burrowers don't have.

I would have said Barimoor, but since he had already been picked, I chose Wastoure, coz he seemed to fit better (the fact nobody knows him applies more to him than to Barimoor, who's known at least by his minions).

Anyway, I'm eager to read the next riddle

You're even closer now- but if you haven't read the source, that probably isn't too helpful.

In the interests of keeping this thread going, though, I'm going to go ahead and give you your first guess, Zargon, because he is very close to the clue I originally gave. My intended answer was Kartoeba, the chaos beast that lives beneath the temple of Pflarr in the Lost Valley (module B10), but Zargon also comes close to the clues (ancient evil, the fragile stalemate would, in this case, refer to the various cults of the Lost Pyramid).

So I think I'll work on my riddling skills and hand this one over to DM for the next riddle.

Just to appease my curiosity, what's the deal with Kartoeba's history?

He's this Cthulhianic looking creature that dwells beneath the Temple of Pflarr in the Lost Valley of the Hutaaka. IIRC, he was originally summoned forth by the Hutaaka to take care of the renegade Traldar that share the valley with them (the Traldar revolted against their overlords at one point, and there has been a war between the two races for centuries). Currently, Kartoeba is barely held in check by the priests of Pflarr in the temple. The introduction of a third faction into the valley (the PCs playing B10) seriously changes the dynamics of the war between the Traldar and Hutaaka, and likely ends up in the priests losing control of Kartoeba and the beast running amok.

Kartoeba seems somewhat similar in motives and appearance (well, he's got tentacles, anyway) to Zargon, so I wouldn't be surprised if the two were somehow related- ideologically, if not physically. Probably servitors of similar Immortals.

(My theory was that Pflarr had long abandoned the outer world Hutaaka, and so the priests of "Pflarr" had secretly turned to the worship of Ranivorus instead, and Kartoeba was his creature. The non-clergy caste of Hutaaka don't realize this, of course, and believe they still worship Pflarr. Just my theory, though.)

According to Gaz10, description #13 under "Oenkmar", mentions that his hideout is a treehouse in the gardens of that city.

Ain't I a stinker? :D

Argh! I thought of Angus McDuff to begin with but also dismissed him because of the treehouse thing!

Actually I think I have to to that last riddle; that was clever. I too thought of Angus McKlintock but dismissed it.

I can't think of one at the moment. Oddly enough the treehouse reference is what made me think of Angus McClintock/McDuff.

Perhaps this thread would get more throughput if it had more than one running riddle; with three, when a winner takes a while to notice he is supposed to ask the next riddle, there would be one or two other riddles possibly in play. With good use of quotes, it shouldn't get too confusing.

I think it may have something to do with M5, an adventure I know well, but for some reasons some names don't ring a bell (3 sisters keys???)..

Anyway, just for the sake of clarity, the answer to my riddle was not really the 5 mages of Eloysia, but the Auratus, a gargantuan bird that can move continents and dwells in Eloysia's space

and seek out the heroes foretold.
I know the bane of Death's servant,
Though that knowledge will not save me.

Probably an easy one, but it keeps things moving, at least.

Hey, it's DAMN difficult this one! Can you give us more clues, eldersphinx?? Okay you're a sphinx, and an elder one too, but don't be too obscure in your riddles, please! :D

If I were to place my bet, I'd say the answer has something to do with module X10... am I pointing in the right direction??

The answer might not be that obscure, but the hints certainly are! ;)

Take a Scottish island, famous for its midgies
And add a medical shapechanger.
The answer is one of the highest men in the world.

If you know my areas of interest very well, you might (just) be able to get it. But you have to work out the meaning of the clues too! :P

Thorf, what have you drunk recently? or smoked, for that matter???

First: IS it a riddle regardin Mystara or the real world ?
Second: Midgies?? do you mean small flies or dwarves???
Third: Medical shapechanger??? Freaking awesome, where do I find one??

You really stunned me with this one... now let me go reboot myself down the stairs, I've got serious system failure problems........................................

Yep, the answer to this riddle is something that only Mystara fans would ever know about.

Midgies are tiny little biting flies that infest the outdoors in the summer in some parts of Scotland. Rather unpleasant.

And the medical shapechanger is definitely the coolest part of the riddle. :D You'll kick yourself when you work it out!

everything seems to point to the Man of Hoy (which I saw when I went up there)...
don't think it has anything to do with Rousay, Shapinsay, Eday, Sanday, Stronsay or Westray... or the Shetlands (Fair isle, Foula, Mockle, Unst, Fetlar, Yell, Whalsay) or Skye, Rona, Raasay, Isles of Lewis and Harris, Uist, Benbecula, Barra, Canna, Rum, Eigg, Mull, Coll, Iona and Tiree, or Jura, Colonsay, Islay and Arran (did I forget any??)

OK, here's my riddle...

Alone I stand 'midst the darkest beach
on a barren ocean whose life I leech.
Bring me your worthy, bring me your outcast.
Come stay by my feet and never recall your past.
Find rest near me when time does not matter
or walk the sands free of life's chatter.
I'll watch over you in stillness and silence
but see me you will, from arrival and since.

But here is the truth which is little known,
a disaster by others and ruin is sown.
A battle was fought by forces untold
between those with no bodies and those with no soul
Twisted and blighted over the years,
I'm now the source of so many fears.
And fear me you should, I'm neither kind nor sage,
I can twist your mind with breath and rage.

What am I?

Sidenote: I don't think this riddle will need it, but in the interest of keeping things interesting and moving, I suggest that if a riddle hasn't been guessed in about a day, a clue should be given (as Spellweaver was doing). Hopefully this way we won't find ourselves stalled.

Mystara is my world; my home, it is here.
Though up on my crown, another's drawn near.
I can take you there if you know the way.
There's no point in asking cause I never will say.
My head can touch this place of white mist
but I'm never to enter, not even assist.
I am known to many, not lacking in fame.
With both fear and reverence they utter my name!

What am I?

I am surprised that nobody has guessed it yet but I think I may have given it away now. If people are afraid to answer a riddle just because they think they are then obligated to provide one, don't worry about it. Just say that you don't want to give one and I'm sure someone else will gladly. This is for fun - not work! :D

This is sort of a double-riddle, inspired by the evil tanner's contact in Baldur's Gate II.

He was a great king, who made peace with his neighbours and founded a city. He took in his lost brethren but also felt the betrayal of brothers long lost.

And now for the real riddle:

My first is his first plus one.
My second is his sixth minus three
My third is his third last
My fourth is his third minus three
My fifth is the first there is
My sixth is his sixth plus two
My seventh is his second plus three

Who am I? (note: not who is he, but you'll have to figure that out along the way)

It refers to the letters in their names, Celedryl and Doriath. In Baldurs Gate II the PCs are supposed to identify themselves as contacts by giving the proper name, which they have to figure out from another name and such a riddle.

Darn- I figured it was something to do with the elves, and was actually going to go with Celedryl at one point, but I was thrown off by the "founded a city" comment; isn't Alfheim Town only a town (or is it a city, but with the name Alfheim Town?)

I tried Mealiden, Ilsundal, Zendrolion. I even tried working backwards from "Alphaks" (seven lettters), to no avail. I thought about trying Celedryl, but discounted it before working through the combinations.

Wow, great job, Agathokles! I should have known to look in the Alfheim gaz. ;)

Thanks. Actually, the riddle itself was quite easy for me -- it's similar to cryptographic techniques. Guessing the king was mostly matter of luck. I was somehow lead to consider Alfheimer kings because of other recent discussions on Alfheim. Then I remembered that Celedryl had something to do with the Shadow Elves and just tried it...

No bites yet, eh? Here's some ideas that may get this going if anyone's still interested.

Since these riddles are usually written as though the unknown answer was speaking about him/her/it self, perhaps we could have questions asked as if directed at the speaker to provide clues (conversation style). Maybe this way solving the riddles could also be a co-operative activity.

Here's an example for a clue;

You mention looking over a nation. Can you describe it a little.

My land goes to ocean,
Though never I'll meet.
From it to me, the transition,
Nearly six thousand feet.

I've been wracking my brain on this one thinking of any well known mountain a mile in from the coast.
Show
Mt. Minroth (immortal's home)?

Culture20, you're on the right track, but it isn't distance from the ocean.

Here it is combined with extra clues inserted;

By many I'm known,
By some I'm seen,
Touched by no one,
Yet always I've been.

My feet firmly planted.
My head in the clouds.
My torso is slanted.
My majesty abounds.

My land goes to ocean,
Though never I'll meet.
From it to me, the transition,
Nearly six thousand feet.

Close to a valley,
With ancient culture.
Keys to the history,
Of my people I'm sure.

High on my throne,
Among crag and cliff,
I look out all alone,
At a nation in rift.

My people are two,
Divided by name.
If only they'd view,
Themselves as the same.

Mighty they'd stand,
In slendour as I,
Tallest in the land,
Never to die.

Maybe that may help. If you need another clue just ask a question.
