#1squidfur-May 07, 2005 2:14:23 | I'm curious about the status on any sort of official write-up on the creatures produced by the mutating magic of the Pristine Tower. Also, wanted to see people's ideas on how they would handle the New Race characters from the novels (ie. class/stats etc.): namely Magnus and Mahtra. |
#2PennarinMay 07, 2005 2:39:56 | Can't help you on anything official. I'd imagine something in the style of TotDL's Special Attacks, Qualities and Weaknesses. A series of basic formats for all three above categories, like... Breath Weapon [CR +X, LA +X] The creature has a breath weapon doing between X and Y of damage. Account for the higher damage count by increasing the CR and LA counts. Burst [CR +X, LA +X] The creature is able to produce a burst of energy, based on an energy descriptor or kinetic. Fast Movement [CR +X, LA +X] The creature gains between +X and +Y of movement, of a type of the DM's choice. Etc, etc... The DM would use these templated abilities, choose the flavor text for them, put a name on the unamed damage types, choose the type of movement, etc... Take a cue from Steve Bell's Crimson Shadows website which describes exactly that, how to make Pristine Tower races. |

I was thinking of converting it over to 3e. I'm also thinking of taking Pennarin's advice and making a 3 level New Race/Man Paragon class. |

#6PennarinMay 07, 2005 13:41:58 | I was suggesting taking heavy inspiration from the format in Chapter 3: Special Attacks, Qualities and Weaknesses, of Terrors of the Dead Lands, while transforming the specific abilities in that chapter into generic shells adaptable to every creature. To cover all the bases - have all the possible abilities - convert the abilities above and those found in the Crimson Shadows website, plus any other ability that Mathra and Magnus have and that are not covered by the abilities I just mentionned. |

Includes a 10 page .pdf explaining it all, and an Excel file that can randomly generate a creature and calculate its CR rating! It's pretty nifty. I've been importing a ton of Bad Axe Games' products into my Dark Sun D20 homebrew. They do awesome stuff. I can't recommend their electronic things highly enough. For instance, I've ditched WotC's LA system for Bad Axe Game's +CR system found in its $1.95 Gamemastering .pdf and $7.95 Creature Creation .pdf. Regards, Eric Anondson |

Mathra, huh. Where's Gadzilla been hiding then. :D |
#9zombiegleemaxMay 08, 2005 7:00:24 | As mentioned (thanks Pennarin) I've done some work on Pristine Tower races. I have been thinking of giving it a revamp, plus doing creature examples that I never got round to last time. If anybody would like to work on something semi-official and Athas flavoured it would be good to produce something for Athas.org... Any thoughts? Crimson Shadows |
