hm...

Does anybody know if there is work in progress? I would love to see spelljammer resurrected in the new rules system

there was a dungeon magazine that updated spelljammer (just the basics, not the whole campaign)

Really it didn't. It was its own campaign setting that had some similarities to Spelljammer.

www.spelljammer.org has some conversion stuff. Personally, I don't think there's much to it. Convert a couple extra races, port the classes straight across and adapt one of the umpteen ship rules (either sailing or space, take your pick) that have been published for D20 and you're off and running.

Thanks very much, I simply love Spelljammer and would like to incorporate it into my campaign world, perhaps even letting the players plumb fully into the deep reaches of space

Well the Lords of Madness web enhancement http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20050520a talks a little about Spelljammer and updates what the Helm actually does. It is now the device responsible not only for movement, but the gravity plane and the ability to keep the air envelope. Makes a little more sense to me doing it that way.

Does anyone know if WotC has sold the rights to publish SJ stuff to a 3rd party??

:whatsthis

Interesting choice of subject matter to do a web-enhancement on, given what comes out in July...

The rights to Spelljammer has not been sold per say, but Kenzer does has the right to "hackify" all AD&D material, including settings and therefore Spelljammer. In fact, they are releasing "Hackjammer" this July, due out sometime around the 2nd or 3rd week of July.

Hmmm, don't like those changes. A direct hit to the helm will thus disable gravity and make the air go poof, letting all aboard suffocate. Which reminds me of a question, it there any 3.5 spell that allows you to breathe when there is no air, like in space or when buried?

The web enhancement implies that we won't be seeing much other D&D 3.5 spelljammer, seeing that they redefined the nautiloid ships as artifacts from the distant future unproducable in this age. Also the series helmet is unreplacable and unrepairable if destroyed, even by an entire illithid city, obviously helms are also artifacts from the future. So I wouldn't expect many spelljammers to fly through space. A shame, really.

Well the direct hit on the helm does sound more realistic but i am sure inventive players could figure a way around it.

The not seeing SJ much in 3.5? All depends on the DM. I never cared for 3.0/3.5 myself. Seems like to much work/reality for a game to me.

This Web enhancement? Hmm does sound like a kick in the ballz to Hackjammer coming out so soon. Appears if Hackjammer takes off WOTC could bring the elves back to up the SJ shipage or something since the MindFlayers appear to be to weak to build or maintain what they brought with them.

Of course they can. Of course, it also necessitates a LOT of high-level backup magic & magic items.

Naw, WotC could do far worse if they wanted to kick HJ in the neither regions. I do think they have taken to the idea of an almost Cuthulu-like take on SJ, which is one way of going about it. I think I prefer the 'jammers being fairly common approach, but I also have my own little setting & don't have to deal with the problems SJ could potentially introduce in settings like FR/GH/DL. In those cases, it might be best to limit SJ traffic to rare occurences.

Of course, making helms generate air makes cities like Bral impossible, & I love the charm of visiting asteroid cities, estates covering entire small moons, and the like.

Well, what says a helm has to maintain the air/gravity on heavenly bodies? another device inpracticle for spelljammers could be utilized or a simple explination of ( this small asteriod was hit by an ultra rare Korbamite particle which brought the gravity up to norm and allows for the formation of air ) ( I dont know why? The Gods did it! ) you know standard DM jargon for getting out of a tight one. :D

There are a couple of methods around it, but makes 'habitable places' in wildspace very, very rare. That does have a bit of charm in itself that appeals to people who do not like a non-realistic cosmology.

It only makes sense to do it that way if you completely redesign all the ships. Having open-decked ships that depend on a single magic item for air is asinine. If they do sell the rights to someone else, I hope it's someone who actually gets it.
