Denwarf?

I'm missing a lot of vital Mystara information. I know a little about Denwarf the place, but I am more interested in Denwarf the person. Created, evidently, by Kagyar for the purpose of leading the Dwarves into the new land that Kagyar had prepared for them. But who is/was Denwarf, and where is he/she now? Is he an Immortal? A construct? A Dwarf? Something different altogether?

Well, simply put Denwarf IS a sentient golem (modeled to resemble a very tall dwarf) that Kagyar built to lead the Rockborn dwarves to settle into the caverns of Dengar. After ruling them for a while as the first King of Rockhome, he abandoned them and disappeared in the underground caves..

Unbeknowst to the Rockhome dwarves, he was sent by Kagyar in the Hollow World to help the Kogolor fight against the Schattenalfen elves who had just popped up in the middle of their territory.
After leading them to repel the invaders, Denwarf disappeared once again in the bowels of the planet and was put in a state of suspended animation by Kagyar.

PWA tells the storyline presented in GAZ6 when Kagyar resurfaces once again in Rockhome in AC1011, freed from his slumber after Week of No Magic. Gone mad after centuries of sleep, he commands King Everast XV to reliquish his throne to him, and after the king refuses, a very deadly civil war ensues in Rockhome, which leaves at the end both sides shattered. Denwarf gets killed together with King Everast XV, and his son Everast XVI is crowned as new ruler.

That summarizes Denwarf's story.

This is also related in an adventure in Gaz 6, something which I may use later, if I can persuade the PCs to go to Rockhome at the right time.

Yes, I was surprised that PWA1 included that adventure, because for all they knew people might have already used it.

Also, in the Gaz the players have a chance to affect the outcome, but in PWA1 it gives you the outcome and you just have to accept it. Where's the fun in that?

I suppose they thought the week of no magic was too good an opportunity to waste.

I never liked what the Almanacs did with Denwarf. I suppose Alston is partly to blame though, as the more interesting possible consequences of Denwarf's return are toned down.

I would have much preferrred Denwarf to having been cured with the chance of leading the Rockhome Dwarves into a new golden age. WotI+Alamancs really tear down all of the cool cultures don't they?

Sollution: The creature that appeared was not the real Denwarf, but a copy made by Karr or some other of Kagyaar's enemies. The real Denwarf will show up later....

I always viewed the published stuff as sort of like "here's what happens of the PCs don't do anything." Maybe it *was* possible to cure Denwarf, but only a PC (in your campaign of course) could do it. That sounds like a cool story. (Suddenly I'm having visions of a bunch of people trying to hold down this Dwarf-like golem while one guy tries to pour medicine down its throat. I doubt it would have worked like that but that's the way my brain works.)

The Gaz did mention the possibility of curing Denwarf, though not much attention was given to it and it was ignored in the Almanacs. I like your way of looking at it though.

What I don't like about WotI and the Almanacs is that they spend so much time and energy tearing down cultures (Alfheim, Alphatia, Thyatis, Rockhome), when what we really want is to make them even more prominent. Although I agree that having the PCs involved in that is more interesting than just having it happen on its own.

Also, with the countries that are favoured in these products (Glantri, Karameikos), we see that the countries are losing their characteristic traits (Clerics in Glantri, a School of Magic in Karameikos), without providing something radically new and interesting.

I am not really up to date with the Net Almanacs, so I don't know if they have done anything to mend on this, but at least in the case of Rockhome it seemed that they were following the trends set by Joshuan and the Poor Wizard before him.
