#1klaxusMay 28, 2005 12:31:59 | Hello all, I am somewhat new to the DS world (having played some when the original box set came out way back when.) I am planning on running a campaign using 3.5E and the setting info provided in the original Wanderer's Journal. The classic Baxa & Brom artwork still evoke powerful images of the setting for me, but I also like the new artwork James Ryman did in last year's Dungeon magazine. Hope to get more DS info from the board in the future. |
#2GrummoreMay 28, 2005 22:33:35 | Welcome to Athas again then! Glad to see a new face here among the new, not so new and old timers members! Btw, check http://athas.org for THE real DS3.5e conversion and more, check out my web site in my signature. Why? Because I have the hugiest darksun links page of the net. Yes, thank you thank you. Not everybody at the same time. :D oh! Welcome again. |

#5jon_oracle_of_athasMay 29, 2005 4:55:36 | :P Welcome to the boards, Klaxus. Ral have mercy on you. |
#6klaxusMay 29, 2005 8:41:33 | Thanks for the welcome folks. I have checked out the 3.5E rules and I'm in the process of printing the material and creating a DS binder for it. I also noticed that Shei-Nad has a site with DS D20 material that seems cover all the basics. Does anyone know what the difference is with that material vs. the Athas.org material? |
#7jon_oracle_of_athasMay 29, 2005 11:19:27 | Yes. The athas.org conversion is the *official* D&D 3.5 Dark Sun. Shei-nad's is a hybrid unofficial d20 conversion. Athas.org has to follow rules set by Wizards, but can use DS sources, whereas Shei-nad is not under such restrictions but cannot quote DS sources. For more information on this, I suggest you read the FAQ on athas.org. |
#8terminus_vortexaMay 29, 2005 12:23:31 | Excellent page, Grummore. Your coolness is on par with Frog from Chrono-Trigger! |
#9nytcrawlrMay 29, 2005 13:18:41 | Welcome to Athas again then! God I missed you man. |
#10nytcrawlrMay 29, 2005 13:21:33 | whereas Shei-nad is not under such restrictions but cannot quote DS sources. Yeah, I think I will follow Shei-nad's example when I start putting up my own D20 conversion. Very well done site. |
#11dawnstealerMay 29, 2005 15:11:02 | Does this mean that Nyt has an internet connection again? Could it be true? Klaxus, welcome to the asylum: the patients run everything here. If you want to see sketches of DS critters, money, or weapons, click on one of the links in my sig. Shai's d20 conversion is very good, as is Athas.org's. Most people on these boards use some hybrid of either and any number of other games. |
#12nytcrawlrJun 02, 2005 12:19:45 | Does this mean that Nyt has an internet connection again? Could it be true? Probably sometime in two weeks or less. Right now I'm a slave to the library... |
#13sekerJun 02, 2005 12:36:52 | Yeah I am also in proccess of a "unofficial" d20 modern rules conversion right now..... trying to get the system as close to the fluff as possible on the rules and still keep it simple. Mine will be under the same restriction as Shei-nad's though. I.e. cannot quote official books and such. |
#14zombiegleemaxJun 02, 2005 17:09:47 | Welcome to Athas! If you need maps I have several on my web site. See Signature. |
#15Shei-NadJun 02, 2005 20:05:06 | Thanks for the welcome folks. Yes. Hail Klaxus! The Oracle pretty much covered it. The thing is, I just feel that D&D guidelines are far too limiting for an accurate Dark Sun conversion, and while I respect athas.org's work, I really don't feel the official conversions (athas.org's and pazio's) do justice to the Dark Sun setting. I wish to rehiterate that I don't think so. If people like it better that way, good for them. To each his own. I'm not here to bash any people's work. It takes too much time and effort to come up with this stuff to get it thorn down, believe me. Anyways, I feel that a d20 conversion allows for a better conversion of Dark Sun with D&D3.5 mechanics, instead of D&D3.5 mechanics with a Dark Sun theme (like Pazio's). Feel free to mix both (especially since mine isn't complete anyways), and I'll appreciate any and all feedback you would have. I hope you enjoy your return to the BEST D&D setting there is! Shei-Nad |
#16klaxusJun 03, 2005 19:04:47 | Thanks Shei-Nad, Jon and to the rest. I will most likely take and use what I would like to see for my own campaign from what is available. I most enjoy the "struggle just to survive" aspect of the Dark Sun setting. It definitely has a sword & sorcery feel to it for me rather than the typical high fantasy which I feel has gotten really old for me. I have been greatly influenced by the best CRPG's from a few years past as well. Both Fallout and Planescape: Torment are my all-time favorites. If they ever made a CRPG Dark Sun title in that vein, I would be instantly hooked. |
#17sekerJun 04, 2005 8:21:21 | Thanks Shei-Nad, Jon and to the rest. actually there were a couple of darksun CRPG's that were made a long time ago..... and you can normally find them if you look for the. the names of them were shattered lands and wake of the ravager both set in darksun ..... plus there are a couple of darksun neverwinter night mod's out there if you play neverwinter nights. |
