Is there anything in the 3.5 Unearthed Arcana that you think would be appropriate or inappropriate for a Greyhawk campaign? A couple of points:

  • I know that you can use whatever you want in your campaign, I'm thinking of what would retain the canonical flavor of GH.
  • Certain things in UA, such as whether you use armor as damage reduction, aren't much of an issue. I'm wondering about things like gestalt characters, generic classes, prestige paladins, racial paragons, wizards casting spells spontaneously, etc.

Just curious about what people think.

The prestige bard, ranger, and paladin, all have a more 1e feel, so if that's your flavor of Greyhawk, it might be appropriate.

I don't think gestalt or generic characters are very Greyhawk, nor are spell point or spell recharge magic systems.

I currently use in my GH game the Racial Paragons found in Unearthed Arcana. I always thought that this was a good idea, especially with GH. The idea that elves could be better "elves", etc was a very good idea. I had used the idea since I heard about in Monte Cook's Arcana Unearthed. Never got around to actually doing a write up when UA was released. I used the Racial paragons immediately. Good stuff.

I've thought the gesalt sorcerer/wizards, particularly next to regular characters, might make effective Mages of Power. No 10th level spells, just a mile and a half of regular spells to metamagic around with.

How about paladins of freedom for Trithereon? (Although I prefer the holy liberator for that, actually.) Or paladin of tyranny for Hextor.

I really like the variant paladins just in general, but I just disagree with the name. A Paladin of Tyranny of a Paladin of Slaughter is an oxymoron. A paladin is defined as:

A paragon of chivalry; a heroic champion.

This is according to Dictionary.com. While there are other definitions, such as "someone who fights for a cause," these are not true to the origins of the word, which was with the knights of Charlemagne's court, who fought for holy causes and the church. A Paladin of Freedom could work though.

On the whole, I think if you adopt the variant Paladins you should do away with classes like Holy Liberator and Blackguard as they fill essentially the same role. Either that or do away with paladin as a base class altogether and use the prestige paladins along with blackguards and holy liberators.

Oops, I think I just hijacked the thread.
