#1zombiegleemaxJun 10, 2005 6:02:55 | I think it would be fun to collect in this tread as many manes for the variuos planar races as possible..perhaps we can leave out names from Planescape "canon" material, and borrow from literature, our campaigns names, films, other rpg or other D&D settings, etc. etc. For example my DM has ilariously named a rogue quadrone as "Gamecube".. :D so, what do you think about this absolutely useless (but perhaps fun) idea? cheers |
#2ripvanwormerJun 11, 2005 8:53:14 | James O'Rance compiled a list in his Planewalker's Handbook.Bariaurs |
#3zombiegleemaxJun 11, 2005 11:38:06 | All the modrons I have known... Modrons Widget, Gear, Boxer, Strontium 90, Gizmo, X-51, Dee Six, Lemon Lime, One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Collator, Box-In-Bloom, SIDREM, Kilojoule, Ki, Optimal, Optimus, Pariah, BERK, Rorty Cube, and Eye. |
#4eldersphinxJun 11, 2005 17:33:57 | All the modrons I have known... ... what, no Primus? |
#5raymond_luxury_yachtJun 11, 2005 17:35:38 | ... what, no Primus? And no HAL? Or Megatron? |
#6sildatorakJun 12, 2005 1:47:10 | ... what, no Primus? I've always wanted to play a rogue that said it was Primus before going rogue...I just thought it was an interesting idea that couldn't be proven one way or another. |
#7zombiegleemaxJun 12, 2005 7:58:23 | And no HAL? Or Megatron? And no Pentium IV or Athlon (those ones should certainly be enemies of each other)? |
#8factol_rhys_dupJun 12, 2005 10:18:43 | I knew someone who played a Rogue Modron psionicist (2e) named Cpt. Tweedle (the Athar fighter's idea for a nickname). |
#9Shemeska_the_MarauderJun 16, 2005 9:54:06 | For yugoloths I tend to use a mixture of made up names in a very loosely syrian/semitic tone, with some elements of welsh tossed in at times. Larsdana Ap Neut Shylara Akt'Atarm Lazarius Ibn Shartalan Jezifreth Nar Harsindrian Tellura Ibn Shartalan Chorazin etc. There's no real true setup to the names outside of a vague connection to the sound of some elements of real world languages. For the most part they're just made up because they sound cool. |
#10zombiegleemaxJun 16, 2005 10:30:37 | For celestials i often use Latin names such as Digits Dei, Ora pro Nobis, Laudat Dominum, Omnia Munda Mundis, ecc....i find them quite appropriate |
#11ripvanwormerJun 16, 2005 17:09:57 | Some 'loth names I made up for a story I'm writing, most of them bastard combinations of Arabic and Welsh: Dai Khulus Caron Ifor bin A’kin |
#12Shemeska_the_MarauderJun 16, 2005 17:13:02 | Some 'loth names I made up for a story I'm writing, most of them bastard combinations of Arabic and Welsh: *'lothy ears perk* So what's the story about? And by the way, did you ever write up more of those 'Faces of Balance' Rilmani? |
#13zombiegleemaxJun 17, 2005 5:50:40 | A canny arcanolth manipulator in a campaign of mine was named Al Mutajalli..don't know why, but the middle east theme seems to be popular with Yugoloth names... :D Strangely, for Elven names i often use names form Asimov's Foundation Cycle..don't know why, but i find the sound of names such as Endor Levanian, Gleb Andorin or Quindor Shandess quite Elvish.... |
#14wyvern76Jun 20, 2005 3:57:48 | All the modrons I have known... How about slaad names? |
#15ripvanwormerJun 20, 2005 7:47:59 | *'lothy ears perk* So what's the story about? And by the way, did you ever write up more of those 'Faces of Balance' Rilmani? It's called "Twin Furnaces," and it's the result of watching all the episodes of the Twin Peaks television series in rapid succession. Also, it should have the promised Mydianchlarus/Lie Weaver connection. I don't know when I'll finish it, because it's going on rather longer than I expected. The only new rilmani I've been playing with is "Basiliv," an argenach assigned to Oerth (and an old rival of Jemorille's). |
#16ripvanwormerJun 20, 2005 7:56:01 | How about slaad names? From my slaad page: Slaad Master Zgotar, Dread of Limbo (of the Game) B'sot Ramm Ygordrim Qatmos A-OK Number One Slaad BlueOgThree Littleaye Nine ("BlueOg" for short) Nino, Stripe, Glimmer, Portnoy, Slaadzilla, Noitolver, Shagados, Badasses, Getawayoo, Superslaad, Slaademgood, Bicmuppetchairmop, Hashgropper, Another Slaad, TrueChaosFuzz, Odinvilive, Samboni, and a mercury dragon. #17zombiegleemaxJun 20, 2005 13:39:55 | And no Pentium IV or Athlon (those ones should certainly be enemies of each other)? I ran a few planescape sessions and the rogue modron in the party was called Z80 :D |
#18sildatorakJun 22, 2005 12:22:29 | Ifor bin A’kin Interesting if true. I anticipate it will be an excellent story, Rip. |
#19Shemeska_the_MarauderJun 22, 2005 13:45:55 | It's called "Twin Furnaces," and it's the result of watching all the episodes of the Twin Peaks television series in rapid succession. Also, it should have the promised Mydianchlarus/Lie Weaver connection. I don't know when I'll finish it, because it's going on rather longer than I expected. I keenly await reading this And just out of curiousity, what actually in the writing process takes you the longest? Is it that the story develops into something much longer than you expected originally, and you keep writing to do it justice, or is it finding the time and/or motivation to sit down to actually write for more than ten minutes at a time. For me it's the latter lately with individual stories that aren't storyhour related. I've got tons of ideas but I can't seem to sit and stay focused for maybe more than an hour at a time. Plus I don't write in a linear fashion, I jump around to different parts of a story as I'm writing it and then go back and plug up the holes as I finish. Perhaps that's bad, perhaps it's normal. I can't say. I've got at least eight unfinished stories and story fragments that I want to write up and finish, but I start one and then get a cool idea for another and jump to that one. And of course this makes it nearly impossible to finish any of them in a timely fashion. For the storyhour(s) I find it's the former reason. I sit down to write a 6-8 page update and I look up at the clock and it's 5am and I've blasted out a 14-16 page update. This happens alot I find. Maybe it's just a quirk of my mind, or the amounts of caffeine I drink. Dunno. I'd be curious to see how you approach your own writing. |
#20ripvanwormerJun 22, 2005 16:12:48 | ? Is it that the story develops into something much longer than you expected originally, and you keep writing to do it justice, or is it finding the time and/or motivation to sit down to actually write for more than ten minutes at a time. Probably more the latter, but also the former. Right now, what's sticking it is the technical issue of how to do justice to an encounter with the most powerful of the gehreleths. But yes, I'm probably as distractable as you are in these matters. Plus I don't write in a linear fashion, I jump around to different parts of a story as I'm writing it and then go back and plug up the holes as I finish. Perhaps that's bad, perhaps it's normal. I can't say. I do that. If I'm stuck on one part, I often go to some part I'm sure about and return to the other later. Sometimes I'll even start over from the beginning if I'm frustrated enough, and I'll bring "abandoned" sections that I like back as I'm able to. The "tainted by darkness" story I rewrote the first paragraph of five or six times before starting it in a completely different way a week or so later - the revised paragraph ended up being used somewhere in the middle. I have another story, not Planescape related, that has two or three entire first chapters in the same Word document, and it is itself a complete rewrite of a different story I've told from a different character's point of view. I've already written the ending (or, at least, an ending - the final product may have more than one) and two quite substantial middles but I have no idea which beginning is the right one. At least one middle will be dropped, since it has completely the wrong tone. I've got at least eight unfinished stories and story fragments that I want to write up and finish I'm sure I've got more than that. |
