One of my PCs is a wizard and wants to create a few scrolls in the down-time to suppliment his spell arsenal. But 9th level seems a bit high powered for a simple scribed scroll... Is there a rule somewhere that I've missed detailing how to create scrolls differently from other magic items, or is 9th level it? |

However, since the costs involved are high, and the probability of success depends on haracter level, here is a definite diminishing returns issue on lower level characters attempting such a thing. |
Twin Campaigns02-24-08, 06:06 AM | This has a lot to do with the general power level you wish your campaign to have. I have tweaked the rules on this one a couple of times. In our main campaign I stick with the 9th level limit in order to keep scrolls and potions fairly powerful. But: only with high-powered spells do I ask for any ingredients. Regular scrolls and potions can be done without ingredients. Also: I allow for clerical rituals and mage cooperation in some cases to effectively halve the cost & time (like alchemist with potions). However, I have changed the rule for constructs. I allow construction of lower constructs if the said arcaner has a ritual book or similar recipe at hand. But in a more high-magic version of Mystara I would allow making scrolls, potions and low-modifier magic weapons more easily. |

The Glantrian Secret Crafts of Alchemy and Witchcraft lower this requirement to level 5, but their potions lose their powers after a few days. There is no equivalent for scrolls, but it could be somehow designed. GP |
