Alphatian Archmage to GSM Student
by AozOriginal Name: Vaelith Orzalan
The Masked Wizard Name:Bolzen
Adopted Son and Student Name: Quorin Thale
36th level Magic-User reincarnated into a 16-year-old boyOnce a centuries-old Alphatian archmage, Vaelith Orzalan was renowned for his mastery of magic and saving lives after the loss of his homeland during the Wrath of the Immortals. In the aftermath, he perished and will not discuss it. However, through a powerful enchanted charm, his essence and vast magical knowledge were reincarnated though delayed into the body of a sixteen-year-old many years later in 1018 AC. Although his physical form is now youthful, his mind still carries his experience, wisdom, and ambition.
In his past life, he did not seek fame or fortune through grand adventuring—his work was far more specialized. As an exorcist, he was sought after by nobles, scholars, and those with coins who required his expertise to exorcise or banish spirits and other entities. His work was critical but often thankless, and while other Alphatian wizards ate Zzonga fruit he was too busy for foolish things.
Despite his primary job as an exorcist, he had a personal fascination with repurposing magical enchantments. His signature spell allowed him to transfer enchantments from one object to another—sometimes in ridiculous ways, such as extracting the magic from a +5 sword (weapon breaker) and transferring it into a dinner fork +5 (now a weapon breaker) just to see if the process worked. This hobby was not widely known—few people understood it, and fewer still cared. But for him, it was a personal challenge and fun.
In order to infiltrate the prestigious Glantrian Great School of Magic—all for the purpose of studying the Radiance—he required a legitimate and socially acceptable identity and possibly become a noble if need be. After several weeks of discreet observation, he identified a struggling but once well-established Glantrian merchant, Fendrel Thale. Fendrel had run his business for thirty years, once known for supplying rare components to prominent wizards, but he had fallen on hard times after a larger rival systematically undercut his contracts, leaving him vulnerable both financially and professionally.
The turning point came when a band of gnolls attacked Fendrel. Stepping in with a dazzling display of magic—swiftly neutralizing the threat with spells like blur, haste, lightning bolt, and chain lightning—the masked wizard saved the man’s life. Seizing the opportunity, he proposed an arrangement that was as mutually beneficial as it was shrewd.
The masked wizard, now going by the name Bolzen, claimed to have an apprentice—a promising wizard—who was bound for the Great School of Magic but needed a proper family and patronage. This, he explained, would also elevate Fendrel’s status, as having an apprentice destined for the Great School would enhance his reputation. Bolzen further explained that his enemies among noble factions would cause trouble for his apprentice if he kept him within his own circle. To protect him, it was best for the apprentice to be adopted into a merchant family, allowing him to grow without interference. To seal the arrangement, Bolzen invested four thousand gold ducats upfront and arranged one hundred ducats pieces per month for ten years, ensuring that Fendrel would benefit from supporting the apprentice. The adoption was processed through a Glantrian law firm, guaranteeing that no noble house or rival would challenge its legitimacy.
Fendrel, seeing both the prestige and financial benefit, agreed. His wife, Serana Thale, a pragmatic woman who understood the fragility of their family's financial future, supported the decision. Their young daughter, Melis Thale, though somewhat confused by the sudden addition of an "older brother," accepted him anyway. With the arrangement finalized, Bolzen took on the identity of Quorin Thale, the adopted son of Fendrel Thale. To keep the appearance up will send letters home to his family monthly (and small gifts from time to time).
While attending the Great School of Magic as Quorin Thale, he carefully maintained his Bolzen persona, allowing him to continue magical research freely without suspicion, investigate certain circles discreetly through his older, masked identity, and secure magical resources beyond what a mere student could obtain. By juggling both identities, he ensures that his long-term goals remain intact while climbing the ranks undetected.

He aims to be a bit above average but will destroy his graduation test in years to come. All to gain recognition from the Princes, Council, and headmasters. His goal is to pass the graduation test, secure a dominion, and earn noble status. Once he does, he seeks to join the Order of Radiance, if they have not sought him out. Beyond his personal ambition, he intends to revive the Alphatian Empire and the Thale family through magical arts to bring them back to Power.
In a surprising twist of fate, Lya d’Ambreville saw him sneak into the lower levels of the GSM using an invisibility spell (She was seeking down there, too). She never asked questions only asked if he could help her create a custom spell for herself. Quorin thought about erasing her memory but thought she may be an important ally in the future. He agreed and the pair (mostly him) created Lya’s Dazzling Explosive Strike.
