"Gulch Dwarves"

by Marc Saindon

Still trying to imagine more local colors for the Cimarron Dwarves (about 25% of Cimarron's population), and while I'm tempted to give them all sombreros, perhaps the Old West rivalry between shepherds and cattle herders can come into play. Many so-called Gulch Dwarves would be farmers (the horror!), focusing on goats and sheep, and derived products (meat, wool, leather, gunpowder horns), often operating small homesteads and relying on dogs to do a lot of the work, and smaller mounts like mules to get around. Tallfolk (humans) would focus more on larger ranches, riding horses, and cattle drives. Naturally, both groups would have a rivalry, and local humanoid raiders would keep the cycle of conflict and violence going.

Part of the Gulch Dwarf culture might take inspiration from the Texas Germans, with older Dwarves still speaking a Germanic-like language of Rockhome, while younger generations speak more the local Slag, but with an accent. Yodeling would still be practiced, even gaining an odd appreciation by non-Dwarves. Perhaps Gulch Bards would develop a style akin to Tejano music.

they can easily be concentrated in South Gulch, there's even a mine, a trail and hills for sheep
