Images of Gnolls

by Ali Monfis

On my last MidJourney essay on the concept of Gnoll, many comments pointed out that they look more like wolfmen than Hyenas. I tried to improve the quality of the prompts. As a result, the creature is less impressive but more faithful to the lore.

In my universe of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), Gnolls are depicted as hyena-like hybrid creatures, often portrayed as wild and brutal. I love this other very common race. We must rehabilitate this "cannon fodder" to give them a deeper presence..They are indeed the most ferocious and devastating threat in the early scenarios. Their sociology, as outlined in various D&D manuals and sources, generally revolves around several key elements:

1. Gnolls typically live in clans or bands, governed by a hierarchical structure dominated by the strongest member. The clan leader, often the mightiest or most savage, commands the others. Described frequently as nomads, they roam from place to place. They are commonly viewed as marauders, assaulting other communities for food, resources, and sometimes for the sheer pleasure of destruction.

2. In many D&D narratives, Gnolls worship Yeenoghu, a major demon depicted as a gnoll-hyena hybrid. This worship significantly influences their behavior and culture, often making them aggressive and bloodthirsty. Despite their brutality, Gnolls may also engage in complex ritualistic practices, often related to their worship of Yeenoghu. This can include sacrifices, rites of passage, and other tribal customs.

3. Gnolls are generally hostile towards other races, viewing them as enemies or prey. This hostility is often mutual, and Gnolls are typically regarded as outcasts by other races. In battle, the sight of blood frequently drives them into a frenzied rage, and they will not hesitate to annihilate all survivors. Survival is rare in a gnoll raid, and victims often end up as fresh food.

Despite their brutal nature, Gnolls are survivors. They adapt to various environments and can hunt and forage effectively to meet their needs. I enjoy playing them in a frenzy of fury that overwhelms the players like a wave of violence, pushing them into panic. They must quickly understand that there will be no mercy.
