Hags, Crones and Witchcraft

Hags and Crones are not humans, but monstrous creatures. They are twisted manifestations of a form of Elder Magic. Other examples of this magic are The Pyramid Magic of the ancient Nithians. the Rune of Odin (Gaz7), the Runic Sigils used by Cryptomancers (Gaz3), The magic used by the Wise Women (Gaz7) and practitioners of the Secret Witchcraft of Glantri (Gaz3). Some say the power of the Fairies is also linked to this form of magic.
Immortals such as Hel, Freyja, Terra, Verthandi and others have taught this magic to their followers.
HAGS AND CRONES
Hags are believed to be created by Elder Magic manifesting in places of Chaos. Unlike Hags of other worlds, the Hags of Mystara prefer to operate alone. Two types of Hags are often seen on Mystara:
Sea Hags: These are incredibly foul looking creatures found in coastal lands and near the sea. Mystaran Sea Hags are much more powerful than Sea Hags seen on other worlds.
Black Hags: These are found underground and in deep forests. They are incredibly powerful creatures, often accompanied by a number of undead servants. They are similar to Night Hags of other worlds, but are unique to Mystara and much more powerful. (Note: These range from 11-20 HD!)
Crones: Crones are believed to be a weaker form of Hag, but make up for it by working together in covens. They are unique to Mystara. Crones can breed with mortal males and the offspring sometimes become crones themselves.
The Crones of Crystykk: The Three Crones of Crystykk are unique beings found on Mystara, sometimes seen in Norwold. They are not evil like other Crones and Hags, but possibly related to these other creatures. They are incredibly powerful and can offer predictions and knowledge. Some say they are manifestations of Verthandi and her sisters. Some belive other non-evil Hags and Crones exist as well.
WITCHES
Although most crones and Hags were never human, it has been speculated that some humans and demihumans can become Hags and Crones. The Secret Craft of Witchcraft and the Wise Women of the Northern Reaches are examples of two magical traditions of Witchcraft that may hold the secrets of taking on the form of Hags. It is unknown if this secret is limited to Chaotic practitioners of this Elder Magic.
