History: Hallucigenia cannot exist. In the depths of Mystaras prehistory, the entity now known as Hallucigenia rose to power as the patron of its strange, primitive race and waged warred on many of the other ancient entities. To this end, Hallucigenia created Meks, built in his form to wage war an all others. In the era before the divide between mortal and immortal was fully formalised, each creature of its race became part of the dispersed life force of Hallucigenia. Eventually defeated by the Carnifex, Hallucigenia dispersed its life force and became mortal before eventually rising to immortality again. After many thousands of years the ruling heirarch of entropy at the time (Thanatos) gifted power to Hallucigenia, raising him to become the most powerful of all entropic immortals for the second time. Having achieved full heirarch status twice, the blackballs came and took Hallucgenia, and to this day scholars are divided as to whether this amounted to a change in its state of being or merely its destruction.
More recently, in repairing a great rent in space and time due to the release of a great amount of dimensional energy, some eggs of Hallucigenias ancient race were accidentally brought back to the modern era. Upon hatching, they rapidly became self-aware and began adapting Hallucigenian teachings to Mystara as it is now. Carrying part of the essence of Hallucigenia, the ancient immortal had returned.
The very existence of Hallucigenia is a threat to the multiverse as it is. The re-emergence of a life force taken across the dimensional vortex by the Old Ones challenges existence at a fundamental level. How long other immortals will continue to obey their own rules without seeking to destroy Hallucigenia is anyones guess.Personality: Hallucigenia was a driving force for his own race, but after their eradication his obsession moved to parasites, rotting organisms, diseases and degraders of waste. He seeks to ally with creatures and races that are interested in destroying complex organisms and lives, those who would spread viruses, bacteria, rot and decay. He still possesses the archaic notion that one day a single intelligent race will defeat and destroy all others – and is intent on bringing that about for his followers.
Allies: None. Thanatos, Demogorgon and Orcus interfere with plots to destabilise Hallucigenia, but there is no shared purpose – their goal is the destruction of all things, which the existence of Hallucigenia makes more likely. The contrarian immortal Averyx has an interest in studying Hallucigenia, but this interest falls well short of allegiance.
Enemies: Heirarchs of the positive spheres consider Hallucigenia a problem, but are as yet unsure how to deal with it. Hallucigenia has reclaimed its old home plane, an horrific, hostile place where finally defeating him will be a challenge even for the assembled ranks of immortals who could be called upon to do so.
Appearance: Hallucigenia has two typical manifestations. The first appears rather like a caterpillar, with an upturned tail, a spiked back and huge compound eyes. The second is rather like tiger-sized reptile with a huge sailed back.
Symbol: A bright coloured, spiked caterpillar.
