Horse/Riding-Related Magic

by WingofCoot

Protect Steed (Clerical Spell)
Level: 1
Range: Touch
Duration: 6 turns
Effects: Protects one riding animal

This spell may only be cast on an animal (not an intelligent monster) large enough to carry a human rider. It gives the animal the benefits of Protection from Evil: +1 on all Saving Throws, -1 on opponents' attacks against the protected animal, and 'enchanted creatures' cannot make melee or hand-to-hand attacks against the protected animal unless the protected animal directly attacks an enchanted creature during the spell duration (attacks by the rider do not break the animal's protection).

Bridle of Sustenance
This leather bridle is usually made with 20 charges. A horse that wears this bridle need not eat or drink to survive, and does not become hungry or thirsty, but each week without eating or drinking uses up one charge.

Bridle of Flight
This bridle grants a horse the ability to fly, as the spell, once per day for 12 turns (2 hours) upon command by the rider.

Barding of Arrow-proofing
This scale barding +2 (AC 4) gives a horse the benefits of Protection from Normal Missiles once per day, upon command by the rider.

Barding of Lightness
This magical chain barding +2 (AC 3) can be made in either small or large size. It is exceptionally light.

Small barding of lightness will adjust itself to fit either a pegasus or a hippogriff. Its encumbrance is 200 cn.

Large barding of lightness will adjust itself to fit either a griffon or a small roc (6 HD). Its encumbrance is 800 cn.

Barding of the Dragonslayer's Steed
This is field barding +4 (AC -2, 4000 cn encumbrance) made for a war horse. It grants a horse a +4 bonus on saving throws vs. Breath Weapon.

It reduces damage from area effects, including breath weapons, in the same way magical suit armor does for characters; at +4 value, it reduces damage by 3 points per die of damage (or Hit Die of the dragon), to a minimum of 1 point per die. In addition, unlike normal suit armor, this barding also reduces damage from lightning-based area attacks (such as blue dragon breath).

Furthermore, breath weapons (only - not other forms of area effects) inflict no damage on a successful saving throw.

For example, a 9 HD small blue dragon, with 40 hp, breathes on a 15 hp war horse in Barding of the Dragonslayer's Steed. The damage is reduced by 27 (9 HD x 3), to 13, and the war horse's saving throw is at +4; if successful, the horse takes no damage.
