Thoughts for campaigning in Hule
by OneEyedZealSo two idle thoughts that may be helpful for campaigning in Hule.
First is that trickery and deception are largely privileges of the powerful--the common people are expected to be honest, and largely are. So farmwork, cottage-scale industry, market trade, neighborhood watch and similar daily tasks are much the same as elsewhere, it's just the noble and temple intrigues and high society that really lean into lies and double-meanings. Not really fair, but what can you do.
Second is that within the powerful and privileged class, deception and trickery likely most manifests as a kind of specialized jargon--statements may be factually false, but if you're sufficiently clever and have the right insider knowledge you can grasp the hidden truth and come out ahead. As an example, a Hulean Diviner's directions to get from Azurun's Panther Gate to Iniquity's Collegium might have about forty steps, and involve spending two hours backtracking through all the worst parts of town. But if you notice that Step 2 is "go two blocks south on the Grand Avenue", and Step 37 is "turn on to the Grand Avenue and go three blocks south", you can simply continue straight down the Grand Avenue and cut out all the detours in between if you like.
(Though the question then becomes whether the Diviner's directions had thirty-five steps' worth of unnecessary peril purely to f**k with the unwary, or instead as an unobvious warning to not walk straight past the Inquisitor's Tower that fronts right up on the Grand Avenue ten blocks south of the Panther Gate. Because Hulean Diviners. :o )
