Additional information regarding the Koskatep Megadungeon
by Francesco DefferrariI wrote it :) and indeed the tactical aspect of the game is not fleshed out as the dungeon is 'not balanced' for specific levels on purpose. It is intended as a 'realistic' location and one who hasn't been discovered yet because all those who went there died.
The lower levels have threats which probably can be overcomed only by Master-level parties, as indeed 'winning' the Megadungeon really means to change the world.
That said..
- The players do not necessarily have to find all the levels. They could well find only one, two or more as the DM prefers. This means they could uncover just some mysteries rather than all of them.
- The players could visit the location multiple times once they discover it and retreat each time, leaving some parts for another time.
- There are multiple factions which should eventually return to Koskatep and try to take possession of it again. This kind of event could have the players as agents of a much bigger expedition, which could therefore provide aid and support.
- It's not impossible to play Koskatep as it is for any level, lowering the threats by subtraction (of hp and powers) and/or providing a reasonable 'deus ex machina' aid from one of the involved Immortals. Still the DM should be aware of the possible consequence of finishing the dungeon and the players should eventually choose a faction, being Ixion or Nyx, the fairy folks, Hel or Thanatos.
A player not connected to any faction should hear some legends first, then discovers the place but maybe bringing back only some minor treasure and tale, to be approached later by one of the faction. Or more than one.
Anyway if you have any other question, let me know.
