New Ringlo

by WingofCoot

Population: 2,200

New Ringlo is the sacred site of the Redwood Elves - the location of their clan relic - and their capital. It is the only settlement which is truly permanent by elvish standards, though others may remain in the same place for more than a human lifetime.

It is also a center of knowledge. Clan elders serve as assistants to the Keeper of the Relic and record the clan's history. Elves capable of becoming spellcasters tend to concentrate here. The rare craft of blacksmithing is taught and primarily practiced here.

New Ringlo is not a conventional city, or a particularly dense settlement.

There is a central sacred complex built around the Standing Stone, which includes the residences of certain clan leaders (the chief, the Keeper of the Relic, some clan elders involved with tending the Relic or recording history) and their associates, as well as guards responsible for the protection of the complex. It also includes storehouses. These structures are framed with huge timbers and are quite sturdy; while wooden buildings do not last an elf's entire lifetime, they are well maintained and re-constructed when this is needed. The building complex around the Stone has existed in essentially its current form and design for over 3,000 years.

However, the great majority of the population lives in an outer area where homes, storehouses, and workshops are scattered about in a patchwork landscape of orchards and heavily managed groves, gardens and vineyards, artificially dug ponds, etc.
