Beyond the Sylvan Highlands
by WingofCootThe Highlands are isolated from the human cultures farther north on Jomphur by both physical barriers and other surrounding cultures.
To the west and south is the formidable mountain spine of Jomphur, inhabited by many dragons and other large monsters; to the northwest, the mountains become slightly lower and more wooded, but are the territory of a Faenare culture (more settled and populous than Faenare usually are on the Outer World).
To the north, a wide semi-tropical and tropical land is inhabited by various groups of fairy folk. This area is the largest "outside" contact of the Sylvan Highlands - the pixies and sprites found in small groups in the Highlands are those who left, or were expelled from, the fairy folk lands farther north.
To the east and northeast, between the Sylvan Highlands and the sea, a band of lush grasslands, spotted with regions of savanna, is heavily inhabited by dinosaurs of many types. While in the Highlands themselves only the smallest dinosaurs can be found, these plains are thronged with huge species - triceratops, tyrannosaurus rex, and several gigantic sauropods. The savannas in this region are warm temperate (not tropical) and quite moist pine savannas. Browsing by the large herbivorous dinosaurs keeps the pines from taking over this savanna/grassland region. In the plains and marshes around the mouth of the Greenwater River, the dinosaurs are especially numerous. This dense population of large dinosaurs has so far discouraged any settlement from seagoing cultures.
