Conflicts within the Sylvan Highlands

by WingofCoot

The gakaraks are extremely hostile toward the elves. Elves who meet gakaraks on a hunt will fight if escape is not possible, but generally prefer to flee as gakaraks are very powerful and even a single gakarak can usually overcome a small hunting group of elves.

The centaurs are not subject to gakaraks' hatred for humans and demihumans, but gakaraks are still dangerous and violent creatures - centaurs avoid them when possible.

Treants will fight gakaraks when they meet if they outnumber the gakaraks, but since both species live in only very small groups, neither will or can engage in war.

Dragons and other large flying monsters that lair in the mountains to the west often hunt in the western half of the Sylvan Highlands, and so come into conflict with the centaurs of the uplands, or occasionally with hunting/gathering parties of elves venturing out of their normal terrain. (Gakaraks and treants are not seen as prey by dragons, rocs, etc.) The centaurs are skilled fighters, but even so, this predation is a major reason why the centaur population of the Sylvan Highlands is smaller than the elven population despite their shorter generation time.
