Shrines as a game mechanic

by Marc Saindon

A quick idea is to allow a roadside shrine of the appropriate faith to grant, once per day, the benefit of a Long Rest to a Cleric (or Paladin) after taking a Short Rest. In Ylaruam, a Cleric of Al-Kalim is probably going to have an advantage, but not so in Thyatis.

Norse Clerics of the Northern Reaches might have wooden idols of Thor and Odin. Druids might find menhirs and dolmens on the Isle of Dawn. These shrines might also require some maintenance and faith, meaning it gives itinerant priests and pilgrims a purpose to provide the shrines with regular upkeep of prayers and offerings. And it suddenly provides bandits with a target (and players with potential quests to stop them).
