Karameikos - Relevant information

by Håvard

CHARACTERS

Jurrik of Verge (p 134) was a brave warrior who eventually became a renown Paladin in Karameikos. Together with his lover Lorrista of Luln, they fought many evils across the young Duchy. During one battle they fought against a Black Dragon and barely survived. Jurrik wanted to pursue the dragon as it escaped north, but Lorrista had begun thinking about her home town that was dominated by the forces of the Black Eagle Baron. She had determined that she wanted to fight the Baron. Jurrik did not want to leave Lorrista, but he realised that they both had important tasks in front of them. Before parting, he gifted his lover with his sword, the Faithful Avenger.

Tragically, Lorrista perished at the hands of Baron Ludvig von Hendriks who gave the blade to his lieutenant, Norbrand the Bold. Norbrand was a slaver as well as a powerful supporter of The Black Eagle Baron. When Norbrand's slaver operation was discovered by a Gold Dragon, Norbrand was forced to fight the dragon. After a long battle, Norbrand slew the dragon, but the sword was lost as it fell down a mountainside. Norbrand returned to the Black Eagle Barony and continued doing evil.

The sword that was lost to Norbrand, the Faithful Avenger was found by two of the slaves that escaped Norbrand's forces when the Gold Dragon attacked. These were two Halfling heroes, Henrikel the Just and Karryn the Stout. These heroes went on to great and epic adventures on the Elemental Planes and even went against the demonic forces of Orcus and a powerful Lich whose phylactery they destroyed on a distant world.

Jurrik of Verge went on to travel to the Northern Reaches, doing many heroic deeds. As he was attacked by powerful Trolls, he was rescued by two Valkyries (p157); Olrun and Hladgudr. The Valkyries brought Jurrik to the Outer Plane of Asgard to reward him of his many heroic deeds.

Notes: The only character canonically tied to Mystara is Lorrista as she fights the Black Eagle Baron (explicitly mentioned). However, since the sword passes from one character to the next, it makes sense that they all fit into the same setting. The sword is later mentioned to having been used against Orcus and Acerak which is why I sent the two halfings (it was my decision to make them halflings, we only have their names and deeds) on adventures across the planes. Acerak could suggest Greyhawk, but at least in later editions, the Lich does seem to have phylacteries on many worlds, so I decided to keep that vague here. The final story about Jurrik and the two Valkyries was adapted from the monster section of the book. I decided to make the Paladin mentioned into the same character as Jurrik which tied a nice bow to the story. I decided to name the Valkyries after the two sisters of the Valkyrie who married Wayland.

I think there is more we could do with these characters and maybe come up with names of the two dragons as well. I decided to keep Norbrand alive so he can be a villain in later adventures.
