Who is Gareth?

(FYI, despite being known for my twisted plots, I'm leaning toward the simple Gareth = Benekander, but I hope you find some of these ideas interesting and use whichever you want IYC.)
So there is:
1. Gareth = Benekander, from the Mystara
Mailing List posted 6 May 1998. The most convincing argument for
why this should be so was offered by Sharon Dornhoff on the Mystara
Message Board posted 3/01/98, that being: that he's such a pivotal
NPC in WotI, he damn well HAS to be Gareth ... because Ann Dupuis
HAD to show him, doing SOMETHING in the Almanacs! He's too central
to the PCs' own experiences, for her to POSSIBLY leave him out!
