The Wyrd as an Old One

by Marc Saindon

Wyrd

More of a concept than an entity, the Wyrd could be either a very powerful Immortal postulating for status as an "Old One", or one of the lesser members of that omnipotent group that Immortals know about. It might be some kind of Over-Deity like Ao (FR) or the Lady of Fate (Al-Qadim), or some kind of multiversal singularity.

As a being, its goal is to enforce a version of destiny which have the norse tales of the sagas with constant elements: there is Thor, a Loki, Odin loses an eye, Ragnarok is the big showdown, etc. The details may vary from world to world, with Mystara having a realm called Asgard, whereas it's called Ysgard in the Forgotten Realm universe.

The Wyrd usually works indirectly through the main 3 Norns (Seers), of which there are different versions in each alternate universe. What the entity needs is to have the stories happen over and over again, either physically as the events happen, or in the minds of people when they tell and hear the tales. Thus, there's Immortal Odin (KW) and god Odin (FR) because it's part of a greater scheme of something that lives within its own schemes. Because it tends to repeat the same patterns over and over again, one might suspect that it is Lawful in alignment, although it probably transcends such concerns.
