Expanding the Northern Reaches: Bryggermester

by Marc Saindon

(5e Artificer Alchemist tweak)

"Skål!"

Basically, you're an Alchemist of the Northern Reaches, and you brew mead and ale for those large feasts at the Jarl's Hall. While most brewers will be Commoners or Specialists without any actual Artificer levels, you stand out as something above the rest. You can brew beer that works as Liquid Courage, you can mix a Glogg that really heals, and probably grasp the basic of a still ('if it's red, you're dead, if it's blue good for you'). More importantly, you're part of an ancient brotherhood that shares ancient recipes.

Great Meadhalls train Bryggermesters in each nations' capitals. Ostlands' brewing guild would be known as "the Cup of Kvasir", and they honor both Kvasir and Odin as patron saints. They focus on refinement and tradition, precision and repeatable results. They also brew the Mead of Poetry, which would be awarded to the best Skald in the 3 nations every 5 years (it might count as a n Epic Task on the Quest for Immortality). They also have some chemical lore from Ylaruam.

Mead of poetry

Soderfjord's guild is called "the Cauldron of Aegir". They claim to be the more ancient of the brewers. They focus on variety and spontaneity, with each season of brewing giving new products with different taste. They experiment with various fruits, and even with white wine (as they're south enough to have vines). Ostlanders scoff at them as they're seen as perpetually re-inventing the wheel, but it's a friendly rivalry.

Ægir

Vestland's guild, the Brotherhood of Heidrun ("the Goat Sign"), is more opened to foreign influences, so they integrate dwarven know-how in beer brewing, Karameikos vodka, Ethengarian koumiss, and many others. The other two guilds often consider it to be a "lesser guild" or "not a guild at all", but regardless of its status, the Brotherhood of Heidrun is the one making the most money.

Heiðrún

The Bryggermester might trade a Level 1 Artificer ability or a Feat for Thieves Cant, not because they are thieves themselves, but because as Barkeepers they might be privy to a lot of secrets.
