The Magistracy of the Coast

by WingofCoot

Population 84,000 (North District: 30,000; Middle District: 40,000; South District: 14,000)

This area is not represented on the Council of Deshret. Before the Second Deshret War and Imperial rule, it was part of Protia, but as part of Deshret's treaty of annexation, it was separated into a distinct area governed separately by the Empire directly (rather than through the Council of Deshret). This was done to prevent concentration of power and give the Empire more direct control of this rich land, the best food-producing area in all of Deshret.

The Magistracy of the Coast is actually three separate strips of coastline, each extending only 12 miles (four Imperial leagues) inland - the North District extends from Protia's northern border 40 miles north along the coast; the Middle District is directly south of Protia's border, running 50 miles southward along the coast; and the South District begins 50 miles south of the southern border of the Middle District (separated by a region of Accursed Barrens) and runs 40 miles further south. The South District is surrounded on two sides by Accursed Barrens and is heavily militarized, and less populated than the other two Districts.

The coast is lined with fishing villages, and a narrow coastal plain (5 to 6 miles wide along most of the length of the coast) supports highly productive farming and thus a great many farmsteads and tiny hamlets. The official boundaries of the Magistracy extend 12 miles inland, but hardly anyone lives outside the coastal plain, with the exception of one mining village in the bordering hills.

Government
The Magistrate of the Coast is a direct subordinate to the Governor and the second ranking Imperial official in Deshret; the position is not hereditary but is held for life unless removed by the Governor, Imperial High Council, or by the Emperor directly.

There is also a District Magistrate for each of the three districts, and mayors for any settlement exceeding 240 households (as of the last census which may be quite out of date, there are only five of these); these officials are chosen by the Magistrate with the Governor's approval.
