The Elf Character Class - Revised
by Jim BobbIn my OD&D campaign, the demihuman classes have been expanded to allow their players more of a chance to participate in the higher level games in the CM and M series of adventures. How fun is it when your 10th level elf finds a scroll of Delayed Blast Fireball and he can't learn the spell? Sure, at these levels of play, he has the experience to gain 3 attacks per round, but the Elf is also a spellcaster, why can't his magical abilities be expanded? We use Gaz 5: The Elves of Alfheim and Gaz13: The Shadow Elves, but the expanded spellcaster abilities are for NPC elves that remain closely tied to those lands and beliefs. This revised Elf Class is designed more for the travelling PC and is balanced to allow higher level advancement without making the need for high level human Fighters and Magic-users obsolete. The description of the Elf class as given in the Rules Cyclopaedia, p25 is unchanged, except as outlined below.
Prime Requisite (Standard and Shadow): Strength and Intelligence.
Prime Requisite (Warrior Elves): Strength.
Other Requirements: Intelligence of 9 or greater.
Experience Bonus (Standard and Shadow): +5% for Strength of 13 or greater and Intelligence of 13-15, +10% for Strength of 13 or greater and Intelligence of 16 or greater.
Experience Bonus (Warrior Elves): +5% for Strength of 13-15, +10% for Strength of 16 or greater.
Hit Dice: 1d6 per level with Constitution adjustments, up to 9th level. Starting at 10th level, +1 hit point per level and Constitution adjustments no longer apply.
Weapon Skills: 3 initial, +1 at levels 3, 6, 9, 11 and 15. +1 additional skill every 200,000xp beyond 4,100,000xp.
Other Skills: 4 initial, +1 at levels 5, 9 and 14. +1 additional skill every 500,000xp beyond 4,100,000xp.
Maximum Level: 15th level.
Armour Allowed: Leather, Scale Mail, Chain Mail; Shields allowed.
Weapons Allowed: All.
Special Abilities: Fighter Manoeuvres (Lance Attack, Set Spear vs Charge), 60' Infravision, Extra Languages (Elf, Gnoll, Hobgoblin, Orc), 1 in 3 chance to Detect Secret and Hidden Doors, Immunity to Ghoul Paralysis, Magic-user spells at 2nd level, Fighter Combat Options at 9th level, 2 Attacks per Round at 11th level, Half Damage from Breath Weapons at 14th level.
Special Abilities:
Standard Elves: Fighter Manoeuvres (Lance Attack, Set Spear vs Charge), 60' Infravision, Extra Languages (Elf, Gnoll, Hobgoblin, Orc), 1 in 3 chance to Detect Secret and Hidden Doors, Immunity to Ghoul Paralysis, Magic-user spells at 2nd level, Fighter Combat Options at 9th level, 2 Attacks per Round at 11th level, Half Damage from Breath Weapons at 14th level.
Shadow Elves: Same as Standard Elves with the following modifications; -1 penalty to Saving Throws involving sound based attacks, +30' to Infravision, suffers 1 hit point of damage per hour of exposure to sunlight.
Warrior Elves: Same as either Standard or Shadow Elves with the following modifications: No Spell Ability is ever gained, +1 bonus To Hit, only need half of the amount of Experience as Standard/Shadow elves to advance in level.
