On healing ...

by Craig Antoun

I may have shared this before, but here is the healing rules I use in my BECMI D&D campaign (some homebrewed). Maybe someone will find it useful.

Resting and Natural Healing: Characters must rest/sleep at least 8 hours in 24 to be considered rested. Resting for 8 hours in a safe location, with no interruptions (i.e. no wandering monsters) heals 1 hit point of damage to injured characters.

Fully resting for 24 hours heals injured characters of 1d4 hit points modified by their Constitution adjustment (if any). Achieving full rest requires that the following additional conditions be met:

- Access to a bed, bedroll or similar makeshift bedding material.
- Shelter from inclement weather (building, tent, cave or similar).
- Removal of bulky equipment such as backpacks and armor.

If these conditions are not met, characters are still considered rested for purposes of fatigue recovery but no natural healing occurs.

The more typical form of resting can include any non-strenuous, day-to-day activities, such as going to town, buying things, hanging out in the tavern, studying at the library, etc. Any combat, spell use, or similar activity does not constitute rest, so no hit points can be regained. For each full day of casual rest, a character will regain 1 hit point (this is the same as resting 8 hours as detailed above).

Regardless of the number of hit points, four weeks of continuous bed rest will restore any character to full health.
