Etymology of Hinterlander Names

by Travis Henry

I looked at the four names from DotE, Book One: p.67

Penn son of Bran
Bran (was chief of Raven-Meet when the Thyatians came)
Brian (Penn's brother, ruler of the remnant of Penn's clan)
Dylan (Penn's son)

Penn is "head, chief" in Breton, Cornish, and Middle Welsh, all from Proto-Brythonic penn:
(In Modern Welsh, it's pen with one "n")

Bran is the Brythonic word for "crow, raven": brân in Welsh bran in Breton, Cornish, and Middle Welsh, all from Proto-Brythonic bran. There's also Brân the Blessed, a giant and king in Welsh mythology.

Brian is an Irish name and a Breton name. Though in an American context, the name would be associated with Ireland. Some scholars suggest that the name was borrowed by Irish from the Bretons who accompanied the Norman invasion of Ireland, and that the name was unknown before the famous King Brian Boru. Others suggest there was a native Irish "Brian" which merged with the Breton name. There is also a Brian in Irish mythology.

Dylan is a Welsh name "son of the sea", "son of the wave", or "born from the ocean."

Are there any more Thratian names?

If not, then 3 out of 4 of them are Welsh (or some form of Brythonic: Middle Welsh or Breton or Cornish), and 1 of 4 is Irish or Breton (or mixed Irish-Breton).

What this means to me is that, if Thratian is a canonically a single language (as stated in PWA2), then it is best represented with a Welsh base, with some Irish "localisms" present, at least the Raven Clans. Perhaps the other clans could have other localisms, or not.
