Tangor Bay Kiboko (Giff Enclave)

by Marc Saindon

Tangor Bay has vast swamp lands, and rather than go the usual route of populating with nasty lizardmen and bugs, perhaps an alternative is to place a small Giff enclave. In ages past, when Blackmoor was dealing with Spelljamming civilizations across the universe, Giff merchants would sporadically show up in Mystara. After the Great Rain of Fire, a scouting vessel came to check up on the planet, and unfortunately crashed in Skothar. The ship was a total loss. After a long trek, they managed to find friendly Tangoran tribes to trade with, and a few negociations later, the Giff got a large piece of swampland (that the Tangorans had no interest in anyways).

The crew being mix-gendered (there was an auxiliary nursing staff), the Giff community would go on for many generations, becoming an increasingly matriarchal society, as female Giffs would handle village life and local politics, while males would travel as merchants or mercenaries. Firearms technology was lost (and Savage Coast smokepowder unavailable), although quite a few Giff continued the tradition of Artificers, although a bit more centered "bamboo tech" (various hunting traps and rube goldberg devices).

The Giff, now called the Kiboko, have slowly abandoned their military traditions to embrace more mercantile roles (a bit like a friendly version of the Hutts). They lose Firearms-related Traits (replace it a Feat that gives advantage in commerce or social situations). Despite 5e claims that they are Medium, a Giff-Kiboko should count as a Large creature. Kiboko pay hommage to the Empire, but are largely left to self-rule (as no one in the Tangoran bureaucracy wants an assignment in the swamps).
