Known Mystara Skyships (and other flying vessels)
by LoZompatoreMy own contributions to the list!
1) The Heldannic capital Voidship and one-man flying boats:
This ship is detailed in Episode 8 VotPA encounter in space between the Princess Ark and an Heldannic fleet of airships. By reading carefully the description it is clear that this capital vessel is of a different class of with respect to light or heavy warbirds. The description includes one-man flying boats (possibly voidships themselves) in tow of the capital ship.
Voyage of the Princess Ark Part 8, Dragon Magazine #161 pages 41-43:
The largest of the five, a very large war galley, had an eagle figurehead, and its hull was engraved with golden feathers. Two large eagle claws jutted out on either side of the galley's prow. The vessel bore the banner of a capital ship. Many pennants and main sails revealed a black lion against a white background.
...
The war galley was very heavily armed with catapults and ballistas. I could see metal bolts all along its hull, holding together an ominous coating of metal plates. This ship was not built to fly in the air, like the Princess; it would require far too much magic to be worthwhile. I suspect it was built in this airless void with the help of several smaller vessels. Large feathery oars slowly rowed the galley through space, occupying four decks of the ship. The strangest sight, however, were a half-dozen small black boats - or lack of a better term - tethered to poles at the sides and stern of the galley. These were each large enough for one man and had man-made wings and tails like those of ravens. Two rods, probably weapons packed with Heldannic clerical magic, jutted from beneath the wing.
2) Named Heldannic Warbirds:In Bruce Heard's Timeline of the Heldannic Knighrs two warbirds are mentioned by name - Adler and Sturmkondor:
AC 968, 1st Quarter The warbird Adler lands on Matera, staying for seven days of geological exploration. Finding absolutely nothing of value or interest, although proud to have been the first, the Heldannic Knights make no further forays to the moon.
AC 1014, 3rd Quarter: ...Days later, renegade soldiers of the Order stage a mutiny aboard the Sturmkondor. They name themselves the Wolves of Heldann, and flee to Glantri with their prize.
3) Hulean fleet of flying airboats:Hule has a fleet of 10 flying airboats manned by skeletons. See PWAII page 102, referenced also in X10 and X5 modules.
4) The Tornado Boat class of fast Alphatian combat airships:Mentioned only once in DotE, DM's Manual page 103:
The PCs will be floated into Blackheart, to within ten miles of Shraek, on a small, fast air-ship combat vessel (often called a tornado boat).
5) The Alphatian Crimson Guard frigates - and Alphatian floating launches:From VotPA Episode 11 (Dragon Magazine #164). It is not known if the Crimson Guard is tasked with defending the sky of the whole Metropolitan Alphatia or just the area above Sundsvall. From the description in the episode the latter seems more probable to me. The skyships are explicitly defined as "frigates" in the episode.
Notice also the reference to small floating launches in text below.
VotPA part 11 Dragon Magazine #164 pages 43-44:
The answer came swiftly as we approached the aerodrome over Sundsvall. Three imperial skyships raced toward us. This, at least, had not changed. As expected of the aerodrome's Crimson Guard, they spotted our invisible ship and reacted swiftly. I ordered the Haaken colors to be hoisted, along with a parliamentary banner. Two of the crimson airships flanked the Princess while a squad of guards requested to come aboard.
...
Suddenly, a sailor broke into tears. He screamed and ran for a small floating launch. Before anyone could react, the young man was already floating down toward Sundsvall. A single crimson frigate swooped by; much to everyone's horror, a blast of lightning shot forth. The man fell off the launch's remains and tumbled like a rag doll toward the distant earth. A deathly silence descended upon the crew. Slowly, one after the other, they returned to their quarters. That was all.Hope this helps!
