Mystara+Birthright: Makai Campaign

by Marc Saindon

(pre-colonial Ierendi & Sea of Dread)

One element of critique that BECMI Berserker singled out quite finely is that despite Ierendi being the Hawaiian resort of Mystara, there is little in regards to actual Makai characters or culture in the Ierendi gazetteer.

One idea to correct this is to further develop the Makai as a fantasy culture (in opposition to an accurately historical polynesian culture) by stealing from the Birthright campaign setting (2e).
Birthright (campaign setting)

Ali'i become the nobles of the Makai, the equivalent of the Scions of the Birthright Bloodlines, who have their power by having Immortal heritage (a process lost to Pandius). They form various Houses, which can be named after polynesian deities (House Pele is really into fire walking, House Kanaloa is more about surfing, etc.), with the Cult of (dark cultists types) playing a role analogous to Azrai's bloodline.

Another idea is have a mortal Scion's blood ability manifests when he gets his first Ta moko ("tattoo", although these are more like coat of arms than a modern fashion statement). A member of House Pele who get 'Elemental Control' should be restricted to fire elementals, to keep with the theme the volcano goddess, while water elementals would be the only ones House Kanaloa could have access to with this power.
