Alternate Mystara: the MacTruaghin Clans

by Marc Saindon

While I like the Atruaghin as a concept, even if they're a bit of place between India, Renaissance Italy and Hawai'i. I like Klantyre as fantasy Scotland, but that principalty being landlocked leaves the sea fog, the kelp and the coastal regions out of the picture.

Maybe an alternate version of the Atruaghin Clans makes them scottish instead of native american. Klantyre still exists as a breakaway region or immigrant community that got forced to leave due to its magical practices (leaving Glantri mostly unchanged), meaning perhaps that there's a strong anti-magic sentiment in the MacTruaghin clans (or at least a ban on necromancy).

The 5 Tribes (Gaz14 should have reversed clans & tribes, as clans are components of a tribe, not the other way around) still rally around an animal emblem: Horse, Bear, Seal (instead of Turtle, with selkie legends being part of their origin), Stag (instead of elk) and Serpent (instead of Tiger, still the token evil Tribe, formerly Wild Cat worshippers). The Serpent Tribes are modeled on the picts instead of the aztecs, and are still prone to sacrifice a lot of people, but there is a 'Wild Cat' resistance among the populace.

The Atruaghin Plateau is renamed the MacTruaghin Highlands, and the Clans divide themselves between Highlanders and Lowlanders depending on whether their settlements are on the plateau or not.

The Seal Tribe has several clans that deal in smuggling and piracy, leading more contact with both Minrothad and Ierendi, and these 'Sea Dogs' are a common sight in many ports of the Known World.
