Mystaran fleets

by LoZompatore.

Here you are the most complete list about Mystaran fleets and ships I managed to write looking throughout the whole official material.
Maybe I lost some ship's names, but I think I have included the great part of the available info. It's a huge amount of material. If your PCs go sailing, they will get bored long before they will met all the ships listed in this article...

As you may guess, everything inside this article is official.

The ships are grouped for nationality. They are divided in the same classes of the Rules Cyclopedia:

small galley
large galley
longship
war galley
small sailing ship
large sailing ship
vessel
special ship

If possible, troop transport capacity is also specified.
Special ships include flying and submergible ships, the Ierendian Fireships, the Alphaks' Volcano Ironclads and other noticeable vessels (such as the war catamarans of Kron). It is assumed that wartime fleet is 10 times standing fleet.

Most of the ship's names comes from GAZ4 (or GAZ9) detachable counters, even if many of them come also from the rest of the official modules.
When a ship name has no module reference it is intended that it comes from GAZ4/GAZ9 counters.

At the end of this article you will find also a list of merchant's and private's ships of difficult allocation (unknown or disputed nationality).

ALFHEIM
Elven Swan Ship.......(small sailing ship, flying) Asvoria Treesearcher (CoM)
Lightboats (flying ships, built in an unknown number by elven communities that possess a Tree of Life)

ALPHAKS'VOLCANO
120 ironclads (undead crew. Each Ironclad counted as a large galley. Admiral: a lich. (M1)

ALPHATIA

The Alphatian Navy may be reconstructed from PWAI. Many Alphatian fleets were left stranded in many harbours of Norwold and Isle of Dawn. Other fleets were fighting offshore Metropolitan Thyatis; although they are all counted as "Remnants of Alphatian divisions" you may notice that they all have the same effectives and the same combat values. Considering that the Alphatian fleets docked in Ekto, Trikelios and Dunadale shouldn't have suffered any damage during the WotI's war with Thyatis, we could argue that the data showed in PWAI refers to an intact Alphatian fleet.

In detail, from PWAI we know that:
8 fleets surrender to Thyatis in AC1010
1 fleet is in Ekto
4 fleets are in Thothia
2 fleets are in Trikelios
4 fleets are in Dunadale

Each of these fleets has: 16 small sailing ships, 4 small sailing ships converted to troop transport, 4 large sailing ships, 4 large sailing ships converted to troop transport.

Total: 304 small sailing ships, 76 small sailing ships converted to troop transport, 76 large sailing ships, 76 large sailing ships converted to troop transport.

Then we have the Petty Alphatian Nobles Fleet, described in M2 module. They are harboured in Trollhattan. The fleet composition is: 4 war galleys, 8 large galleys, 25 small galleys. Admiral: Zhenggys.
Submergible fleet:

Shark.................(submergible vessel) (DotE)

Alphatian submergible fleet includes also Aquas galleys (see "Aquas" entry).

Flying Fleet: this fleet is made from military flying ships plus some other ships belonging to powerful mages.
Most of the military fleet was destroyed in Aasla at the beginning of WotI events, so we don't know its full power. Here is a list of all of the known flying ships:

Mastwalker............(small sailing ship, flying) (PWAI)
Flying Fish...........(small sailing ship, flying) (PWAI)
Black Kraken of Draco.(small sailing ship, flying) damaged beyond repair in AC1010 (PWAI)
Princess Ark..........(large sailing ship, flying) heavily reshaped in AC1000 (CoM)
Tipsy Tirant..........(small sailing ship, flying) with base in Alphatian Neatharum, Captain: Marakaz (WotI)
Air ship of Love......(large sailing ship, flying) in Rainbow Park, above Gaity island (DotE)
Enchanting............(small sailing ship, flying) Captain: Solinari Astridian (CoM)
???...................(flying carrier) built for joined Thyatian/Alphatian mission to SpillWorld (DotE)
16 flying small galleys in Alphatian Neatharum (PWAI)
2 flying longships in Floating Ar (PWAI)
2 flying war galleys in Floating Ar (PWAI)

Moreover, Prince Zandor has a flying castle suitable for warfare. Its captain is a lich (M2)

Main known naval bases of Metropolitan Alphatia are:

Eagret, Aasla and Trollhattan for the Navy (DotE, M2)
Aasla and Floating Ar for the aerial fleet (WotI, DotE)
Aquas for the submergible fleet (DotE)

Other naval bases could be located in Stonewall and Randel Kingdoms, due to their militaristic attitude.

AQUAS
10 submergible galleys (counted as small galleys)
A submergible galley sink in AC1010 on Qeodhar's route due to Zandor's mistake (PWAI)

CATHOS

ESTERHOLD
We know that Port Marlin is a major trading harbour, it should have many merchant ships and also a large number of military ships in order to protect trade routes against Minaean pirates.
It is possible that some flying ships are harboured in Skyfyr.
Unluckily, we don't have detailed data about these fleets.

FIVE SHIRES
The navy is essentially made of privates and pirates.
The government's fleet (standing condition) is made of: 2 war galleys, 4 longships, 2 small galleys, 11 small sailing ships.

From GAZ8 we know that there are about 120 noticeable pirate ships belonging to the Five Shires. At least 30 of them are always active in Mystara's seas. Most of them are small sailing ships.

Most famous modern pirates operating in Five Shire's sea:
???...................(??? - pirate) Captain: Red Rory Hackskull ("The halfling as tall as a dwarf") (GAZ8)

Flying fleet of Heldannic Knights (from PWAI):
12 warbirds (both small and large) in Metropolitan Heldann
6 small warbirds in Hollow World before WotI
4 flying longships in Hollow World Stonehaven outpost
1 large warbird in Hollow World Oostdok

Skiplade, legendary Frey's ship. Built by the Modrigswerg dwarves, this ship is always moved by favourable winds, and can be folded many times in order to become as small as an handkerchief. (GAZ7)

Wartime fleet: 16 small sailing ships converted to troop transport, 16 large sailing ships

HORKEN
Wartime fleet: 4 war galleys, 12 small sailing ships, 2 large sailing ships converted to troop transport counted as flagships

HULE
Due to Vilaverde's containment policy, Hule doesn't own a consistent military fleet. This could haven't been true in the past, due to the presence of the old, lost Hulean colony of Garganin on Davania's coast.
In AC1010 Huleans manage to launch a small fleet of pirate ships (bought by some Savage Coast countries and from the Black Eagle Barony). This fleet is operating in the waters south of Malpheggi Bay.

Hule has a flying fleet, made of 10 flying longships.

IERENDI
Ierendi's Navy is strongly militaristic and organised. It is made of many heterogenous naval units; many of them are assembled only during wartime or crisis periods. An estimate of its whole wartime power can be made joining the information of GAZ4 and PWAI.

Royal Brigade: Assembled only in wartime. 36 small sailing ships converted to troop and horses transport, 24 war galleys. (PWAI)
Elite Disembark Force: Seldom used. 9 large sailing ships converted to troop and horses transport, crews are made of low level mages.
(PWAI)
Royal Fleet: Average wartime fleet; 36 ships in total (galleys and sailing ships, about 16 of them belongs to privates). (GAZ4)
Fire Island Fleet: 12 fireship: rarely used all together. (GAZ4)
Naval Academy Fleet: 10-15 galleys and sailing ships. Maybe its crew are still not very well trained, so it should be used as a reserve unit.(GAZ4)
Patrol Fleet: 30 small ships of various types (small galleys e small sailing ships) constantly patrolling the archipelago (GAZ4).

Rory Rosebeard was probably a famous Ierendian Captain. Probably he is the first explorer to reach the Isle of Dread in Thanegioth Archipelago in modern times. (X1)

KARAMEIKOS
Standing fleet: 4 small sailing ships converted to troop transport, 2 small galleys
In AC1010 Karameikos give shelter to the remnants of 4 Alphatian naval units defeated by Thyatians in the naval battles of Deirdren and Dunadale on the Isle of Dawn (see "Alphatia" entry). This may explain the large number of Karameikan ships launched after AC1010.

Motherlode Rover......(longship) crew of gnomes, Captain: Robern Sternslate (B8)

KASTELIOS
This trading city should have a large cargo fleet on the routes between Davania and the Serpent Peninsula. From CoM and PWAIII we know that Kastelios is a growing trading power, so a larger number of ships is expected to be launched in the future.
Unluckily, we don't have detailed data about these fleets.

KENDACH
Wartime fleet: 12 small sailing ships converted to troop transport, 12 large sailing ships

KOLL
trading port somewhere west of the Known World. From Dungeon #9. Many galleys and sailing ships stops in its harbour.
Unluckily, we don't have detailed data about these fleets. We know the names of just a couple of ships:

Effete Efreet.........(large galley)
Old Ghostly...........(small sailing ship - submergible and pirate) crew of aquatic elves, Captain: Sork the Enchanter

KRON
A city built on rafts, former commercial partner of Minrothad and other coastal countries of the region. An alliance with the triton city of Suthus reverted Kron's activities to piracy. Kron's fleet is made of very fast boats and small ships, suitable for raids.

Wartime fleet: 24 war catamarans, 10 rafts trained by sea horses (X7)

MERIANDER
Wartime fleet: 14 war galleys, 42 small sailing ships, 7 large sailing ships converted to troop transport counted as flagships

MINAEA
Minaean Navy seems composed solely by pirate longships (from M2), but from PWAIII we know that it should harbour also a cargo and military fleet. Unluckily we don't have information about them.

Pirate Fleet: 80 longships, Admiral: Krondell the One-Eyed (M2)
Around AC 930 the Minaean Coast was infested by the ships of a famous pirate lord called Yodar, very dangerous to Alphatian merchant vessels.
The fleet was called "Yodar's Sea Wolves".

MINROTHAD
Minrothad fleet is similar in organisation to a Mariner Republic, such as Venice. The ships mainly belongs to the Guilds or to private merchants, and are assembled in one or more fleets in times of need.
Wartime fleet: 108 small sailing ships, 10 large sailing ships
Transport fleet: 50 large sailing ships converted to troop transport (M2)

Support fleet: 15 small galleys, 30 small sailing ships

Bethilda's Star.......(large sailing ship) personal ship of King Ericall. Captain: Traegar (M5)

QEODHAR
Wartime fleet: 18 longships

REDSTONE
Wartime fleet: 4 small sailing ships converted to troop transport, 4 large sailing ships

SAVAGE COAST
We know that Vilaverde and Texeiras are the major naval power of the region. Vilaverde should have the most numerous and aggressive fleet (due to the number and extension of its colonial empire and its containment policy against Hule's ships). The Kingdom of Renardy should possess at least a small fleet, due to the presence of a small colony in the Immortal's Arm.
Unluckily, we don't have detailed data about these fleets.

Selwynn...............(??? Vilaverde merchant) Captain: Killian O'Kaine (SC)
Tritao................(??? Texeiras merchant) Captain: Dom Iago (captured by Sea Plague orcs) (Dragon #200)

Trader Jack, founder of Richland Trading Post (Dungeon #6)

SEPTENTRIONA
Wartime fleet: 4 small sailing ships converted to troop transport, 4 large sailing ships

SIND
Sind should have a cargo and military fleet, because the rajas' attempts to build a naval force are centuries old. Unluckily, we don't have detailed data about these fleets.

The rajadhiraja of Sind has a great flying palace, built sometime after AC1000.

SERRAINE
This city is an huge flying device populated by gnomes, sphinxes, pegataurs and other creatures. Serraine can launch a large number of small flying ships, similar in shape to Ist World War aircrafts. (source: PC3)
10 triplanes
12 biplanes
3 fighter-bombers
some transport aircrafts

SLAGOVICH
This city has a large trading port; anyway it should have a fleet numerically inferior to Vilaverde's and Texeiras's ones. Unluckily we don't know any details about its fleet.

SODERFJORD
Wartime fleet: 60 longships

Raknar................(longship)
Olafson...............(longship)

SeaStalker............(vessel) belonging to Surshield Navy, launched in AC1012 (PWAIII)

THOTHIA
Wartime fleet: 20 small sailing ships converted to troop transport, 20 large sailing ships.

THYATIS
Wartime fleet: from PWAI we know that Thyatis, at its full strength, own 23 fighting fleets, for a total of 184 large sailing ships, 46 war galleys, 138 small galleys.

Docking bay of some Thyatian fleets:

I fleet: Lucinius
II, IV, IX, XX, XXI, XXII fleets: Thyatis City
VII fleet: Hattias
XII fleet: Raven Scarp
XV fleet: Terentias
XVIII fleet: Tel Akbir
XXIII fleet: Carytion

Another naval base is located in the Pearl Islands (maybe in Seagirt, see Helena Daphnotarthius biography inside PWAI), and another one should be in Kerendas, because this city is the seat of the Vice-Admiral of the Navy. Maybe another naval base is in Beitung, in the Ochalea island.

Moreover, from M2 modules we know that Thyatis owns two military transport fleets. Given that the 23 military combat fleets have progressive numbers from 1 to 25 these two transport fleets should have the two remaining numbers (I suggest the numerals 24 and 25):

XXIV fleet (transport): 3 war galleys, 15 small galleys, 60 large sailing ships converted to troop transport (Naval base: Thyatis).
XXV fleet (transport): 12 large galleys, 40 large sailing ships converted to troop transport (Naval base: Isle of Dawn, maybe Newkirk).

Chief Commanders of the whole Thyatian Navy:
Commodore: Rezzan (changed to Helena Daphnotarthius during WotI)
Admiral: Zaaviq (in the naval base of Thyatis City)
Vice Admiral: Kobhrax (in the naval base of Kerendas)

36 small sailing ships converted to troop transport
49 war galleys
12 large galleys
153 small galleys

TOTAL:
570 ships

Notice that both Empires base their naval power mainly on sailing ships (mainly large ones). Even in Thyatian Empire, the sum of all sailing ships is about 50% more of the sum of all the galleys.
We may think that the average Mystaran naval technology around AC1000 is in a transition phase from galleys to sailing ships (a condition similar to Europe's 1450-1550 period), with some nations experimenting even more modern ships (Minrothad produces small clippers, that are a typical ship of XVIII century).

Appendix 2: the largest 12 fleets of Mystara

This list includes only the nations whose fleets are explicitly known, referred to wartime conditions. Many nations, such as Vilaverde, Texeiras, Kartelios, Cathos and Slagovich, also possess a very large navy, and they surely take place somewhere in this list (especially Vilaverde). The lack of detailed info about them prevents their enlisting.
It is assumed that a wartime fleet is about 10 times a standing fleet.

1) Alphatia (whole empire)
924 ships + 28 flying vessels (maybe much more) + 11 submergible vessels

2)Thyatis (whole empire)
570 ships

3) Ostland
280 ships

4) Vestland
256 ships

5) Five Shires
190 ships

6) Ylaruam
180 ships

7) Minrothad
168 ships

8) Darokin
162 ships

9) Heldann
136 ships + 23 flying vessels

10) Ierendi
138 ships

11) Alphaks' Volcano
120 ships

12) Minaea
80 ships (maybe much more)

Nations that have at least a flying ship (from largest to smallest):

Alphatia (28+), Serraine (25+), Heldann(23), Hule(10), Glantri(4/5), Thyatis(3/4), Ierendi(1), Ostland(1), Sind(1)

Important note: the numerical entity of a navy, in general, does NOT reflect its true value in battle.
The value in battle depends strongly on the kind of their ships (think about the ironclads of Alphaks' Volcano), their quality (for example Ierendian ships are the best for quality, while Minrothad's clippers should be the fastest), on the training of the crew (Ierendian and Thyatians should be the best) and the value of their captain (maybe Minroth has the best of them). Oh, and on weaponry, of course (Alphatian ships should not be so weak if they have at least a mage on board...). So it is quite difficult to give a classification by battle value. Even the BR system is incomplete, giving the fact that it depends also on climate conditions and on numerical ratio of the involved fleets.
