[Undersea] Mystara's Tritons compared to other editions

by Håvard Another interesting fact about Tritons according to PC3 is that they are a relatively new race in the Sunlit Sea Kingdom, having arrived only about 800 years ago from the "South", presumably the legendary Sea Kingdoms or elsewhere where they were fighting the race of Devil Fish.

I have not yet done a deep study of Tritons through the editions, but my impression so far is that even though they have appeared in every edition, not much have been done with them outside of PC3 untill 5th Edition.

In Volo's Guide to Monsters (p115-116), they go into how the Tritons are both seemingly haughty, arrogant and isolationist, but at the same time are dedicated champions of good. I also like that they have ties to the Elemental Plane of Water which I think is something we can borrow for Mystara, perhaps to a greater extend than I did with this map of Mystara's elemental plane of water.

Mystara seems unique in how Tritons have a significant presence in the Sunlit Sea (their own kingdom) while in most other settings they seem both rare and distant.

Another interpretation of Tritons that caught my attention were the Tritons in the 5E book "Mythic Odysseys of Theros" based on Magic the Gathering. These Tritons seem to be much more monstrous in appearance. While these Tritons are not necessarily evil, the focus is on the occasional conflict between the Tritons and land dwellers and presents the Shorestalker as a type of Triton sent to seek vengeance upon land dwellers. Another type of Triton appearing in this book is the Master of Waves which seems to be some kind of water elementalist. This matches quite well with the spellcasting types found in PC3. I also like that the Master of Waves can summong Water Weirds, a monster which appeared in AC9 Creature Catalog.
