Enemy Outpost from B9 module The Great Escape

by LoZompatore

I would like to point out that B9 module "The Great Escape" mini adventure takes place in a Black Eagle Barony outpost just beyond the Barony's borders, so I'm wondering if some elements of the outpost can be assumed to be common to Fort Doom as well.

Here is an annotated map of the outpost, based on B9 rooms' description:

Some highligths:

1) The outpost is manned by 18 fighting personnel (13 men, 4 women and 1 gnoll) and 12 non-figthing servants (6 men and 6 women), plus the Commander's wife and a female visiting officer. There is room for 2 additional fighters and 2 guests.

Detailed breakdown list is as follows:

1 Commander (F4)
1 Commander's wife (Normal Woman)
1 Visiting female officer (F3)
3 Male Warriors (F2)
9 Veteran male fighters (F1)
1 Female Warrior (F2)
3 Veteran female fighters (F1)
1 Gnoll jailer
6 Male kitchen servants (Normal Men)
6 Female kitchen servants (Normal Women)

2) The Commander has his own comfortable living quartes (living room + dining room + bedroom) and is allowed to have his wife living with him. All fighting personnel have their own private quarters - including the gnoll jailer - and female and male quarters are separated. Notice that in the module all such quartes are described as "officers' quarters" so, possibly, the outpost is actually a local headquarter where human officers supervise the actions of subjected humanoids (an impending raid of Luln by Black Eagles' goblins is mentioned in the module). There is approx. 1 servant for every 2 soldiers, and several people possess low level magical items, so it looks to me such officers are treated pretty well. This could possibly explain their loyalty to the Baron.

3) Female to men ratio (at least among the officers) is approx. 1 to 4; females are not hindered from the upper echelons of the military (the F3 visiting officer is a female and she is treated as a special guest). Finaly, pretty large areas of the outpost are specific for warrior training (men's and women's exercise rooms, sowrdfighting training room). This could possibly reflecting the original affiliation of the Black Eagle's soldiers with some Thyatian martial guild (possibly in Hattias, from which the Von Hendriks' family come from).

4) The torture chamber looks pretty big to me. This could reflect the unscrupulous - if not utterly evil - attitude of those serving under the Baron in positions of power.

5) Building size is some 200 feet x 270 feet. Possibly a two- or three-stories building could be considered to increase the number of officers accomodated on the same land surface. We could assume that each floor could comfortably accomodate 20 officers.
