Optional Experience Point Table for OD&D

by Jim Bobb

This table is one based on the Experience Value Chart from the AD&D 1st Edition. IMC we use it for our OD&D games, as it allows a more realistic reflection of how much a character learns or earns from combating a particular creature, hence creatures that are tougher are worth more than creatures that are anaemic and weak. In game terms, the Small Red Dragon without spell ability is worth 3,890ep - 4,870ep (depending on his HP) where under the old system it is worth a flat 2,500ep. After all the PC's hard attempts to find the beast and survive it, the average group of 5 would only get 500ep for slaying the 10 hit die beast under the old rules!

Remember that these modifiers are only counted if they are relevant to the combat! An orc that has a Sword +1 won't get the 'Uses Magic Items' bonus if the PC's kill him before he draws his sword! Said orc will be worth 11-18 XPs if killed before he knows what hits him, instead of the 15-22 XPs if they had actually fought him (and faced the danger of his sword!).
