Papa Nuar

by Håvard

16 HD male fire elemental
Alignment: Neutral
The volcano is inhabited by a powerful fire elemental creature that the Nuari call Papa Nuar. The locals don't see him as a god (they have other Immortals), but instead he works like a regular NPC. He is the leader of the fire guild who are resposible for lighting lanterns all over the island. As a great lover of music and performance, Papa Nuar hosts the annual fire festival where he summons a number of fire elementals who dance to entertain the people of the island. Most local Nuari will join in the festival and for the main performance, it is not uncommon for whales to arrive at the bay near the Volcano to join in the music. He will be interested in meeting with Bards (if that class is used) or other artistically inclined PCs.

Papa Nuar is actually a kind of ambassador from the plane of fire. If he is killed, the Elemental Ruler may send a replacement. This new elemental may not be as friendly as the original. In addition to local relations, Papa Nuar guards the gate to the plane of fire. He may be persuaded to let PCs through if they help him with the festival or other quests he might have for them.

The Nuari Fire Guild
At night time, lanterns are lit all over the island. The group known as The Fire Guild are responsible for lighting the lanterns. Many of the higher ranking members are magic users and clerics, but anyone can join the guild if they pass the qualification tests. Highly trusted members are given a magical item called the Quarterstaffs of Flaming (Quarterstaff +1-+3, +1d6 Fire damage) which emit a small flame from each end at the user's command. The guild has a friendly rivalry with Eneftiti, a Sphinx who arrived from Thothia many years ago and has taken over the fisherman's guild. That guild do their best to make sure the fishing season festival is even more successful than the fire festival.
