Expanding the Northern Reaches: Kin of Ratatoskr

by Marc Saindon

(5e Ranger tweak of the Swarmkeeper subclass)

Okay, this one will be nuts.

("booh! bad pun!", I already hear)

This Ranger subclass is about information brokering. Like the mythical figure of Ratatoskr (their patron), who spreads rumors along the roots and branches of Yggdrasil, these guys use animal companions like squirrels to spread out and gather information and as a focus for spells (so Alarm would work with a bunch of squirrels screeching to warn you, Web is just a bunch of squirrels overwhelming your opponent), or have squirrel variants of existing spells (so Goodberry becomes "Good Nuts" but with a better name to avoid silliness).

Ratatoskr

Roles these guys might have in Vestland is border patrol, but a Wisdom-focused Ranger could use these squirrels to gather rumors in a region and then spread information to influence the folk and key political figure.

A more urban or a seafaring variant might work with rats instead of squirrels, and use the Pied Piper of Hamelin as inspiration.

---

A note on Ranger subclasses is that they are called Conclaves, which is a synonym for a group, but much rooted in catholicism (it meant locking up the cardinals until they elect a pope). An alternate name for a Ranger faction could be Camp: as outdoorsy folk, a camp is where they live; it's also short-hand for which side you choose in a conflict or debate.
