Runic Warrior (5.5e Eldritch Knight Fighter subclass)
by Marc SaindonThis is the Fighter-Mage combo, who could probably played straight as the BECMI "Elf".
However, with a bit of world-building (see note) in the more recent edition, you could explain that Runes are a distinct system and language of magic, incompatible with the language of standard "Arcane" spells (Alphatian magic), although a Feat could be bought to be fluent in both systems. The magic that the Northern Reaches' Eldritch Knights use, thus, is runic, and casting these spells are not subtle, requiring loud chanting (I refer to BRIAN BLESSED as an example, although Xena war chant could also be an option).
In Norse society, magic was frowned upon, although Odin stands paradoxically as a great wizard. It is also considered "womanly" ("Ergi" or "Argr"), so perhaps the original Runic Warriors were mostly shield-maidens, and some people issued from the LGBT who somehow still manage to carve themselves a place on the battlefield. In recent decades, as Vestland and Ostland modernize themselves, Runic Warriors are getting more socially accepted into the mainstream societies of the Northern Reaches without much discrimination or stigma, although basic non-magical Fighters are still the staple of norse armies. Perhaps they are more common in the urban areas of Vestland, but still are frowned upon a bit in the more conservative areas of the Soderfjord Jarldoms and Ostland.
