The Economics of Spellcasting
by AozAs my mind processes an undead economy.
Let's look at something a bit different.
Gaz3
Casting spells for Gold 1/10th gold in XP.
Buying books 1/10 gold value in XP.--100 gp per spell level --
5th Level Wizard - Spells: 2/2/1- 20k XP---------------9 spell levels: 900 dc per day
Even if this 5th level Wizard casts spells for -40% to sell all the spells
Flashier spells sell better even if it is just a Mending Spell: Looks Sell!!-Wizard would make 540 dc day (54 XP)
-46 weeks and 5 days a week (need time for rest and research)
-230 days x 540 dc = 124,200 dc yearly income (12,420 XP per year)
The Wizard could spend a lot on gold on new Books (like 62100 dc) that would add 6210 xp
LvL- Spells- XP needed......DC per day (40% off Price)
5 - 2/2/1--------- 20k---------900 dc per day (540)
6 - 2/2/2--------- 40K--------1200 dc per day (720)
7 - 3/2/2/1- -----80K--------1700 dc per day (1020)
8 - 3/3/2/2- ----150K--------2300 dc per day (1380)
9 - 3/3/3/2/1--- 300K-------3100 dc per day (1860)
10 - 3/3/3/3/2- 450K-------4000 dc per day (2400)
Let's just stay with 5th Level Wizard without buying books.-124,200 dc per year
and
-12,420 XP per year :o
--Level up in less then 2 years-----------------------------------------------------------------
Moving on to a 6th Level Wizard without buying books.
-165,600 dc per year
and
-16,560 XP per year :o:o
-------------------------------------------------------------
Now, we jump to a 10th Level Wizard without buying books.
-552,000 dc per year
and
-55,200 XP per year :o:o:o
I could retire on that in a few years and level up at the same time

If this was true most Wizard's would open a shop or work for Mage Guild and never leave the City.
My mind wouldn't stop thinking about it. So, I went the other way.
The D&D Rules Cyclopedia
Reverse Engineering Spell Cost
9th level Mage can make 3000 GP per month
-9th level Mage has 31 spell level
-working 20 days a month (need time for rest and spell research)
3000 divided by 20 equals 150 then divide by 31 = rounding up 4.9 dc / per spell level+/- 30% Spell Price for variations.
So, low side 3.5 dc per spell Level and high side 6.4 dc per spell level.
So, with new price system: a 5th level Animate Dead would cost between 17.5 dc to 32 dc
That would really change the numbers in the game going by these prices.
