Stalwarts re-purposed as 5e Goliaths
by Marc SaindonAC 9 - Creature Catalog (p.47) features the unremarkable Stalwart, a tall guy obsessed with accomplishing physical feats and challenges, although they have no background or lore whatsoever. So it opens the door for the Goliath as a character option.
One possibility is to place them in Kendach (Isle of Dawn), where they live in the mountains in small clans, eking out an existence as mercenaries-brigands, with clans from the Eastern Scarlands and those of the West Scarlands holding eternal grudges against the other.
