Bhuts are intelligent, evil beings similar in many ways to lycanthropes and undead. During the daytime, bhuts appear to be normal humans. At night their hair becomes wild and their skin scaly. Their hands turn into claws, and their teeth become fangs. While in this form, they hunt humans for food. They are extremely clever and often use deception and trickery to obtain their meals.1
In combat, bhuts attack with their claws and bite.
Poison Bite (Su): The bite of a bhut is poisonous, and feels cold and numbing to the touch (Injury, Fort DC 14; 1d4 initial and 1d6 secondary Dexterity damage.)
Aura of Secrecy (Sp): Bhuts radiate a magical aura that protects them against scrying, as if under the effects of a permanent undetectable alignment spell.
Immunities (Ex): While they are not undead creatures, bhuts enjoy many of the immunities that undead creatures do. Bhuts are immune to all mind-affecting effects, poison, sleep, paralysis, and disease.
Blessed Vulnerability (Su): bhuts are vulnerable to all blessed weapons (as described in the bless weapon spell description). A bhut that is struck by such a weapon must make a Fortitude save (DC = 10 + damage dealt) or die immediately.
*Skills: bhuts gain a +4 racial bonus to Bluff, Disguise, and Move Silently checks.
Bhuts have a favored class of Monk. The bhut shown had the following ability scores before racial adjustments: Str 14, Dex 10, Con 10, Int 13, Wis 14, Cha. 15.
The bhut first appeared in Module X-4: The Master of the Desert Nomads, by David Cook (1983).
