Valkyrie Ranger subclass

by Marc Saindon

Cue Wagner.

I thought of Valkyries first as a possible Paladin group, but in myth the Valkyries provide the fallen to Odin and Freyja but are not necessarily their servants: the allow Fate to follow its course by gathering the army needed for the final battle, so they might actually serve more Destiny or 'the Wyrd' than any gods. Hence they receive nature-based Ranger spells instead of Clerical magic from gods. They would also be less about laying on hands to heal the wounded and more in tune with finishing off the dying out of mercy, putting an axe in their hands so that they're eligible for Valhalla. So not quite Paladins. They probably also do a lot of funeral services. And death as an inevitable end for mortals is part of nature. Favored Foe replaces Favored Enemy, although the latter could opt for 'Humans' as its target of choice.

Another concept is their animal companion. While modern depictions present them on pegasi or flying on their own with swan-like wings, maybe just ground them back to an older version, with them riding giant wolves. Throw in a cloak of raven feathers for a more ominous look. Princess Mononoke might had a bit more inspiration - the Ranger Valkyrie is not like the MCU character of the same name. Or those opera versions. The Ranger Beast Master conclave could provide most of the mechanics of this subclass (the alternate Primal Companion is a good option to keep a wolf without terrorizing everyone in the inn). Another tweak is that their magic might have aurora borealis glow manifesting when a Valkyrie casts a Ranger spell, and the appearance of many spells are altered to match the color display.

The core sorority would be located in Soderfjord, with the warring jarls providing enough fights to keep them busy. Other Valkyries might venture on the borders of Vestland, or be hired in Cnute's elite guard in Ostland. Older, retired Valkyries might work in taverns (keeping with the Valhalla legend), providing advice and tales along the ale and mead they serve, possibly acting as mentors.
