Wyrd Sisters/Wise Women (5.5 Clockwork Sorcery re-skin)

by Marc Saindon

This is basically taking the pure NPC class of Gaz 7 of Wise Women and making it a playable option in 5.5. This is an all-female subclass.

The Clockwork Sorcerer is re-designed to be tied around the concepts of Fate (Wyrd) instead of "Order" and etheric-like threads of destiny that binds reality together (like the Matrix code, but Viking) insteads of planar cogs and gears. There is no Mechanus, Modrons or steam-punk in this, but runes, the Norns, webs of possibilities. I generally don't mind steam-punk in Mystara, notably with Serraine, but a lot of this gear and cogs can be handled with the Artificers and Gnomes, while Clockwork Sorcery in the Northern Reaches should keep a fantasy Viking medieval theme.

The goal of the Wyrd Sisters is to enforce Fate as dictated by the Norns, so they tend strongly towards Lawful alignment, although there can be disinterested Neutrals. Chaotic Wyrd Sisters probably have a downfall and become (NPC) Hags as a backlash of tampering with the Wyrd (no mechanics for this, but transgressions against the Wyrd should give a PC a few early warnings like a wart, or falling hair). Hunting down Hags could be a priority for this subclass (so they're not always inactive around cauldrons spouting prophecies), and open adventures opportunities in the Northern Reaches' Good Kingdom/Feywild counterpart, possibly making the Iron Witch Angrboda their biggest threat.

The Wyrd Sisterhood is a prestigious group, few in numbers (as they only selected randomly "gifted" individuals), but they are still seen as dangerous to be around as they may prophetize something you don't like (or if they become Hags). Thus, they usually are found outside settlements and left to their own device.

Other cultures might have equivalents, so the Isle of Dawn might have Weird Sisters (with more celtic-witch theme), Thyatians could have the Ladies of Fate (who honor the Moirai) and there can even be a Milenian version (who serve the Parcae).
