#1zombiegleemaxAug 13, 2006 23:47:17 | Fellow Mystara-philes, There've been several mentions of various Mystara-related bits and bobbles that have come out since the Index to Mystara Products (IMP) was compiled by David Keyser in 2000: http://www.pandius.com/prodlist.html, and since he wrote this addendum in 2003: http://www.pandius.com/rcntprod.html Herve Musseau has listed some recent Mystara-relevant DRAGON magazine articles: http://www.pandius.com/drag_315.html There's a free pdf addition to Kenzer's "Little Keep on the Borderlands" called "Beneath the Little Keep", part of which was originally from Knights of the Dinner Table #100 http://www.kenzerco.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_23_24&products_id=40. The download is quite interesting, as it has many detailed 3D illustrations of the keep from various perspectives. The pdf includes a timeline of the keep ("Hell's Throat Timeline") that was originally published in KODT#65, p41. There may be more KotB-stuff on the way. Here's a posting by Jolly Blackburn from Kenzer.

#2zombiegleemaxAug 14, 2006 22:15:31 | Another thing that could be a part of the IMP, are links to prints of artwork featured in Mystaran products, available for sale at the artists' websites, such as: www.larryelmore.com www.clydecaldwell.com (e.g. "Marvelous Magic" at http://www.clydecaldwell.com/large_images/marvelous_magic.html) www.jeffeasley.com (e.g. The Rules Cyclopedia cover at http://www.jeffeasley.com/popups/color/co005.htm) www.keithparkinson.com (e.g. he did the cover for the original Creature Catalogue) Anybody know any other artists' official websites that did work for Mystara? [digression]In fact, a complete index of paintings, illustrations, and artists from Mystara products might be worthy of a whole project in itself someday - an "AMI" - Art of Mystara Index.[/digression] Shane |

#4zombiegleemaxAug 25, 2006 15:41:21 | An Index to Mystara and OD&D Products by David Keyser, updated by Shane Henry -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This page includes all TSR and WotC OD&D, AD&D2E, and D&D3E products which mention the World of Mystara - including the Red Steel/Savage Coast, Blackmoor, Thunder Rift, Ghyr, and Karawenn subsettings, plus any generic or non-Mystaran products which use the OD&D game rules. It extends to other products, not necessarily produced by TSR or WotC, if they provide information on, or are explicitly compatible with Mystara. So while novels, computer games, and products from other companies are included, products like generic miniatures (e.g. a "red dragon" miniature) or use of Mystaran artwork to illustrate generic non-Mystaran 2E characters for the SpellFire! game are not included, as they have no additional information about Mystara or OD&D. There is an appendix which lays out Mystara's relationship with several other worlds or settings, including Islandia, Izmer, the Wilderlands, Pelinore, Greyhawk and the Planescape/Spelljammer cosmology, and the Cthulhu Mythos. At this time, only the net resources at WotC and other professional game companies are provided, but there is a wealth of information provided by Mystara fans on the web. Definition of Terms Explicit - The item is directly and explicitly placed in Mystara. "Canon" material. Implicit - The item does not define where in Mystara it exists, but is linked to Mystara because it is part of the same series, or contains material which is only found in Mystara. Compatible - The item is not set within Mystara, but is compatible with and easily placed in Mystara. This includes non-Mystara D&D material. For this update, Thunder Rift material has been included. Suggested - The item is not quite compatible, but methods and suggestions are made so that the item can be placed in Mystara. Mentioned - The item has very brief mention of Mystara, with information useful to Mystaran DMs. For example, Planescape or Ravenloft products may include a character or setting from Mystara. Unknown - At this time, I do not know if the product is related to Mystara or not. (Vapourware - The material was announced by TSR at some point in time, but in fact the project was never completed nor published. Entries enclosed in parentheses.) Note rules, year, link to cover photo, credits, actual text and/or map establishing it's locale in Mystara. Dragon Mag article names in quotes. Include VotPA episode number. Include summary of KW Grimoire questions. Links to Vaults Dragon/Polyhedron articles. "true OD&D products": Eldritch Wizardry, etc. Note that fans often suggest that generic non-setting-specific OD&D adventures be set in Ghyr or Alphatia since these countries have somewhat of a "generic fantasy" flavor. Some of the products here were retroactively placed in Mystara. AC6 is not included because it only contained player character sheets, and there never was an AC8. WotC released the original B3 module on its website in PDF format. While the overall plot is similar, the orange version provides a different location for the setting, providing a new map and adds a new political entity. JG refers to Judges Guild, which printed a pre-AD&D description of Blackmoor to be set in the JG world. I have not included the Blackmoor book(TSR #2004A) which was published way back in 1975. It is mostly a rules supplement for the then brand-new D&D game, with only a partial description of the adventure fully described in DA2. Note, I am not including the Domesday Book #13 issue, which has an article on Blackmoor. I don't know for sure, but I believe that the information contained in that magazine was most likely included in the DA modules or in the Judges Guild supplement. I have added an appendix at the end for those who don't know what the Domesday Book is. The Domesday Book was the official 'zine of the Castle & Crusade Society, started back in 1968. Membership high was about 60-80 and included such luminaries as E. Gary Gygax, Jeff Perren, Robert J. Kuntz, Len Lakofka, Bill Hoyer and David L. Arneson. The Domesday Book was originally founded by Gary Gygax (one-time Editor - noted at the bottom of the contents page in issue #13). Issue #13 is noted for the very first pre-Dungeons and Dragons-related article ever to appear: by Dave Arneson, no less, entitled, "Facts about Blackmoor", detailing the 'First Fantasy Campaign'. DA5 City of Blackmoor (Vapourware) From http://www.acaeum.com/library/research.html: DA5 City of Blackmoor was a Mystara module scheduled for production in January 1988, but cancelled. The only references we have to it are in an ad by Esdevium Games in Dragon #131 (page 85), an earmarked TSR stock # (9219), and an advertisement in the 1987 TSR Fall Catalog (depicting this pre-production cover scan, which uses the artwork from the cover of Dragon #97). Bruce Heard, in charge of the D&D product line at the time, has said that this module was never even designed, let alone produced and shipped. However, contributor Dave Keyser has told us that the module was actually nearly completed, and the material is now currently with a company (Zeitgeist Games)[...]. Adventures in Blackmoor boxed set From http://pandius.com/refguide.html: This campaign set allows the return of the Blackmoor civilisation in the Known World. A bit of history: Blackmoor destroyed itself 1,000 years ago and was "cloned" inside the Hollow World sanctuary by the Immortals. The Blackmoorians' technological antics finally upset the Immortals who literally kick them out of the Hollow World. Blackmoor re-establishes itself on the Known World, after being copiously trashed by their Immortal (ex)- patrons. Blackmoor distinguishes itself from the traditional fantasy genre because of modern technology equipment that keeps showing up in their setting. These are rare, poorly understood items that become very dangerous in the wrong hands. In a nutshell, Blackmoor qualifies as "dark-age medieval fantasy with technology"! BMa1 - Blackmoor #1 of 2, The Egg of Coot From http://pandius.com/refguide.html: This adventure takes traditional player characters from the usual Known World to the chaotic Land of Blackmoor. They discover the secret and dark wonders of Blackmoor and realise the risks they pose to their way of life. They must shut down one of the known sources of technology-the strange and mysterious Egg of Coot. But it is indeed a deadly place. BMa2 - Blackmoor #2 of 2, The Doomsday Rod From http://pandius.com/refguide.html: An adventure for native Blackmoor characters. These adventurers hear of a secret weapons cache forgotten by the powerful entities of their land. Contrary to the wisdom of characters in the traditional Known World setting, these fellows want these lethal contraptions to fulfil their dreams of power! The player characters are allowed to get their hands on the deadly weapons, but in so doing trigger a doomsday machine. The characters must use (and hopefully deplete) their newly acquired equipment to destroy the frightening machine. A typical shoot'em up escapade for gun powder-crazed players! Bruce Heard's errata and comments here: http://pandius.com/lupin.html 247 Campaign Source Explicit Rakasta DRAGON Archive CD Mystara: Return to the Lost City, by Michael Mearls, 5-page article starting on page 88. article contents: The article recounts the history of the Cynidiceans, describes the main elements of the lost city (including a map), describes the four cults and their goals, gives statistics for the infamous Zargon, and describes (with rules) the drug that makes the Cynidiceans fall into their eerie dream-state. my opinion: The article repeats elements of B4, but with a twist: it is set in the close future of the module, as NPCs (maybe from the author's campaign) have "played" the adventure from B4. However, they failed to completely defeat Zargon, so there are some changes to the setting as a result, even though things are mostly unchanged. The article gives 3E stats for Zargon, and, well, he's a tough bastard -- not at all like the Zargon of B4. The article says he does not remember his origins, and only suggestions are given; while this is not incompatible with B4, it differs from Zargon's origins (and knowledge of it) in the unofficial Cynidicea Gaz. Likewise, the Elixir of Fantasy and its use differ from those in the gaz (and, I believe, is also not exactly like B4). Note that the (unnamed in B4) underground lake is here called Lake Moldvay (after the author of B4). Red Steel: Cinnabar, Red Steel, and the Red Curse, by Franck Brunner, a six-page article starting on page 68, illustrated by Cara Mitten (a picture of a warrior tortle with trident and wooden shield). content: The article contains an introduction to the SC (and how to use it in other campaigns), the history of the Red Curse, rules for handling the Red Curse under 3E rules (acquiring, effects, the legacies, the afflicted including a sample, inheritors, cinnabryl and red steel and vermeil and crimson essence), and a description and 3E rules for tortles including a sample. my opinion: This is a no surprise translation from 2E to 3E of the rules for the Red Curse. Thus, there is no new material. I was a bit miffed by the fact that inheritors are handled as a feat that can be taken repeatedly, as I think the peculiarities of inheritors could have warranted a prestige class, but then the game mechanics of the multiple feat seem quite appropriate. The article does contain a few contradictions or differences with the Red Steel books: - the article gives the afflicted a second legacy (they normally have only one, like everyone else but inheritors). I'd be tempted to say that the original rules are best (it is one package: one legacy, one ability loss, and if you do not protect yourself one affliction), but playtest it and if it more balanced IYC to give a second legacy to offset the affliction then why not. - the article says there is known no cure from affliction. I'd say, use the one in the books, unless you give afflicted a second legacy as per the article in which case don't give a cure to preserve balance. - the article says creatures must have an intelligence of at least 3 to be affected by the Red Curse, which excludes animals. The RS books explicitly say that animals are affected as well. My advice: let the animals be affected, it's more fun to have an even more dangerous (and surprising: ooh, the nice little kitty -- ouch!) wilderness out there. - inheritors who become afflicted: the article is not totally clear how much they suffer; to keep it consistent with prior rules, the adverse effect of *each* inheritor feat should apply, like the gains (so you do not get just double penalty from a normal afflicted, but triple, quadruple, etc.). Other possible interpretations: you get double penalty no matter how many times you took the feat; you get double penalty for every time you took the feat (ie, double, then quadruple, then six times, etc.). I think those are unbalancing, though. Hollow World: Sudnering Ka, by Ken Marable a five-page article starting on page 22, illustrated by Anne Stokes. So, the article feature a new Azcan character type, who steal power from Ka to increase their own. A note about power levels: though I don't know much about 3E, this seems a bit unbalanced. It is somewhat similar to werecreatures, as the Azcans become sort of bestial; however unlike lycanthropy there is no associated downside to it (nothing like the vulnerabilities or difficulties to control lycanthropy ... well, except for an intelligence drop, and oh yeah if Ka ever catches you ... compared to increased strength and constitution, armour class, attack, poisonous blood, special powers (enhanced vision, scent, ...) and feats). Fortunately, since PCs are unlikely to be evil Atzanteotl-worshipping Azcans who enjoy bathing in the sacrificial blood of animals, the Defilers of Ka are more likely to be enemies they encounter that happen to have unusual powers (but no more so than other oddities they are likely to encounter during their adventuring careers), so this shouldn't be a problem. About the integration in Mystara: Well, the article is of course intended to be used with Mystara, and I don't see why it couldn't. A few qualms though: Immortals are called deities . Since when are dinos considered "followers" of Ka? I'd expect followers of an Immortal to be sentient creatures, not animals. Or should we consider all animals to be followers of Zirchev, and plants followers of Terra, and rocks followers of Djaea? Odd. Of course their destruction would pain Immortals who watch over them, but calling them followers? Two princes of the Azcan Empire who are defilers of Ka are named, but there are no princes with those names in Sons of Azca (the name given for the emperor is correct, though), and given that major cities are ruled by the various princes and that some of them are not the gazetteer clearly implied IMO that this meant there was no other prince. Now, there is of course that mention of a four letter word for elf. Well, we'll simply assumed the author meant Schattenalfen. And since there are no half-elves either, that the half-things are in fact SA too, so the defilers are 95% Azcans and 5% SA. It is a shame that the article doesn't say who those SA defilers are. Are they rogue SA who live among the Azcan defilers? Has a group of SA stolen the secret of defiling from the Azcans? Has Atz given the SA the secret of defiling? I was not worried by the mention of barbarians; we can easily assume, IMO, that some Azcans can have barbarian as their class, instead of warrior. Note also that the article says that Azcan mages are mostly sorcerers and not wizards. Blackmoor: Guardians of the Docrae, by Ari Marmell, a three-page article starting on page 84, illustrated by Bob Steinman (a female halfling omatu master with fighting chains, in a fighting stance, background light wood hills). content: The article has a short summary of the history of the Blackmoor area, and of the halflings of the Northern Marches, and notably the Docrae. It introduces a form of dance, that can be pushed by the omatu masters to a very effective form of unarmed combat fighting style. The article contains a full description of the omatu master prestige class. my opinion: I don't know what people saw in hobbits that made them want to make halfling countries the home of powerful warriors, but that must be me. While quite different, the omatu masters are somewhat reminiscent of the hin masters, being such improbable sturdy defenders of their race. The omatu masters are a halfling version of monks with oriental fighting style and weaponry (this is reinforced by the illustration, which reminds me of an anime, like the movie Final Fantasy). To determine how well it fits within Blackmoor, I suppose we will have to wait for the new setting that should be released soon (by Goodman Games, according to the article). I can only assume (hope?) that this article was written by someone in the know. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DUNGEON Magazine All Dungeon magazine contains is adventures, so I have eliminated the Description classification. #5zombiegleemaxAug 25, 2006 15:45:57 | The Dragon Magazine list is not complete. A more complete list can be found here: http://www.pandius.com/dragon.html The articles written by Bruce Heard available on Pandius could also be included: http://www.pandius.com/bheard.html As you mention, elements from my website including the Blackmoor product list and the various downloads should also be included (those that are not already there). For the list of novels, Id also like to include: Pawns Prevail (Implicit, possibly in Norwold) Suitors Duel (Implicit, possibly in Norwold) Immortal Game (Implicit, possibly in Norwold) Unicorn Hunt (???) Summerhill Hounds (???) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Heck. I'd even throw in the Keep on the Borderlands novel, even though it is specifically set in Greyhawk (with notes about such details included). Also, would it be of interest to have a separate section with 3E material that has references to Mystara relevant material such as Blackballs, Orcus, Demogorgon, Arik, Lupins, Rakasta(Catfolk), Draedens etc? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A couple of extra contributions to this excellent list. About Dungeon Magazine: In Dungeon #59 ("Voyage of the Crimpshrine") it is suggested to slightly modify the AD&D adventure "The Sea Wolf" (Dingeon #55) and to locate it on board of the Crimpshrine. In Dungeon #46 ("Dovedale") it is suggested to use the AD&D adventure "Pearlman's Curiosity" (Dungeon #32) as a logical precursor to "Dovedale", adapting the description of the village of Ginley Crossing of DM#32 to Dovedale. |
#6zombiegleemaxAug 25, 2006 15:54:33 | Paizo has just released a Savage Tide Player's Guide. This appears to be a cheap $5.00 tie-in to the upcoming hardcover Adventure Path, which will include a re-envisioning of the Isle of Dread. I wonder how well Sasserine could be melded with Specularum? Shane P.S. I'm still on the move, but hope to incorporate everyone's suggestions in a draft revision of the IMP soon. |
#7zombiegleemaxAug 25, 2006 16:08:19 | Really, all those official TSR documents that Bruce Heard posted on the MMB such as the "Mystara Reference Guide" and "Mystara Before and After" should have their own IMP entries. I'd also include links to the Mystara-related POLYHEDRON and DRAGON magazine articles that Shawn got permission to post in whole at the Vaults. Shane |
#8havardAug 27, 2006 15:25:51 | Paizo has just released a Savage Tide Player's Guide. This appears to be a cheap $5.00 tie-in to the upcoming hardcover Adventure Path, which will include a re-envisioning of the Isle of Dread. I wonder how well Sasserine could be melded with Specularum? I actually liked how the initial idea in this paizo forum thread suggests that Sasserine is located in the northern coast of Davania. The advantage there is that we could use Sasserine more or less as is, map and all, whereas if we chose to use Sasserine="KW coastal city" then we have to make more modifications. I will really have to read more of the ST or get my hands on the Player's Guide to see if there is more arguments for either of those choices. The Savage Tide items should definately get some mention on this list, I agree Håvard |
#9zombiegleemaxSep 02, 2006 21:57:03 | Another possible contribution: the 3e versions of certain gods from Deities and Demigods, including the following members of the Asgardian pantheon: Odin, Thor, Frey, Freya, Loki, and Hel; from the Olympian pantheon: Faunus and Tyche; and from the Pharaonic pantheon: Set. Here's a link to a review that lists the gods which the book covers...did I miss any official Mystaran equivalents? I realize that the Mystaran Immortal equivalents have entirely different origins and biographies than the Great Wheel gods, but this is also true of the demons Mystara shares with the Great Wheel cosmology (e.g. Orcus, Demogoron, Kurtulmak the Shining One). The description and powers of the Great Wheel gods and demons should be somewhat relevant in statting up an Immortal version using any upcoming 3e Immortals rules. Also does anyone know if and where Garl Glittergold from the Core D&D pantheon (and Mystara) got a full 3e writeup? Shane |

#11CthulhudrewSep 03, 2006 17:58:43 | Any Planescape books which mention the Shadowelf of Sigil or the guy with the Red Steel armor. I'm pretty sure that Red Steel armor is actually Tanar'ri red steel, and not Savage Coastal red steel. Two different metals That shadowelf- Farrow- is definitely Mystaran, though. |
#12zombiegleemaxSep 04, 2006 20:37:03 | Here's some more detailed information, from Alzarius' post at http://www.enworld.org/archive/index.php/t-126150.html: The Planewalker's Handbook, a Planescape supplement, talks about Mystara when it mentions notable worlds of the Prime Material Plane, right there in the same context as Toril, Oerth, Athas, and others. In Warriors of Heaven, Table 11 at the back of the book has a listing of good and neutral deities that celestials can serve. It lists their divine rank (demigod, lesser, etc.), and their home plane and realm on the Great Wheel. Right in beside the various other AD&D deities are the Immortals from Mystara - except they aren't Immortals there; they're gods, listed in terms of being deities (Rad, for instance, is an Intermediate deity who lives on the Quasielemental Plane of Radiance). 3(.5)E remains in keeping with the 2E version of Mystara. For example, both Atzenteotl and Ka are listed as being greater deities (in Dragon issues #315 and #318, respectively). Likewise, the diaboli are (in Dragon #327) said to still be from the "Demiplane of Nightmares", which is now listed as being coterminous with the Region of Dreams and the Ethereal Plane, and a relative closeness to the Far Realm. Admittedly, the 3(.5)E cosmology doesn't have the Region of Dreams (and the article on the diaboli doesn't seem to indicate if it was referring to the Border Ethereal for the Prime, or the Deep Ethereal, which isn't part of the core cosmology any longer), but the Color Curtain separating the Deep and Border Ethereal in 2E was effectively the same thing. Likewise, the Far Realm was part of the 2E planar structure (albeit outside of it, but it was there), since it was introduced in the 2E module The Gates of Firestorm Peak. |
#13zombiegleemaxSep 09, 2006 21:38:08 | I don't remember if this has been covered by one of the preceding posts or links, but here's the "Dungeon #114 Map and Handout Supplement" including the maps of the "Torrents of Dread" adventure: http://www.paizo.com/dungeonissues/114/DA114_Online_Supplement.pdf I still hope to consolidate all of this stuff into one IMP. #15zombiegleemaxSep 10, 2006 22:51:28 | The description of The Savage Tide Adventure Path in the IMP should have a list of all Known World "easter eggs" (Mystara-specific tidbits). Would someone post the locations for each Mystaran "egg" in the adventure? Here are the ones discovered so far at this thread here: Isle of Dread (the biggest egg) elven perfume from Alfheim (where is this?) rhagodessa monster (where is this?) (Cut out during editting: a stuffed giant shrew (in the taxidermists' guildhall)) Also, it would be useful to have a link to the "Questions and Answers with Mystaran Authorities" page in the IMP: http://www.pandius.com/q_and_a.html. In fact, it might be appropriate to include a link to the CCI in the IMP since it gives the 3E products where Mystaran creatures can be found. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Non-Mystara AD&D Products Note that for the I series modules, the actual suggestion to place them in Mystara was in GAZ2. Domains of Dread retroactively assigned the villain from Ship of Horror as originally coming from Mystara. Not much detail is provided in either case, but it appears on Greyhawk the Egg of Coot has successfully conquered Blackmoor and his troops occupy the area. The RPGA Living Greyhawk campaign did not, however, assign Blackmoor to any of its regions in the world for adventures and campaigns. Hackmaster has already released the B1 and B2 modules for their system. I was surprised how little of B1 was changed, except that it had a few extra rooms and was stocked with monsters. In November of 2001, WotC released a novel of The Keep on the Borderlands. I managed to finish it, nothing spectacular, but the author's source material (the original B2), didn't give her much to work with. The novel assumes the later Greyhawk placing used in the Return to module, and it does seem to ensure that events are set up so that they occur as Return to the Keep on the Borderlands reports the past. One personal peeve, the author just drops some plot threads, apparently assuming people will be familiar with B2 and won't notice. For example, the adventurers in the story meet up with the hermit's mountain lion north of the Keep. They sense but never see the hermit, and later speculate that the controller of the mountain lion may be the same one who is behind the evil gathering in the caves. The author never explains any further, leaving a reader wondering at the end of the book if there was a connection. Sure, if you have B2, you know there isn't, but the novel should stand on its own. Lastly, there were some 16 page RPGA adventure booklets that were released only to participating stores as part of the Adventurers Guild program between 1998 and 2000. These adventures were designed to sell/advertise RPG products that TSR/WOTC was selling concurrently. None of these were designed for Mystara since the campaign setting had been cancelled at the time. But one of those RPGA adventures, The Displaced, was released as a companion to Return to the Keep on the Borderlands. While RttKotB was not set in the D&D Known World, there were three NPCs in the module that were. As it turns out, each of the RPGA modules used pre-generated characters, and although the adventure for Displaced is no more Mystara specific than RttKotB, one of the pregenerated characters is Dubricus d'Ambreville. All the information about him comes from RttKotB. Knights of the Dinner Table #65 "Hell's Throat Timeline" A timeline of the Little Keep on the Borderlands area. Included in the "Beneath Little Keep" file below. Knights of the Dinner Table #100; "Beneath Little Keep". Available as free PDF download here:http://www.kenzerco.com/free_files/Beneath_the_Little_Keep.pdf The download is quite interesting, as it has many detailed 3D illustrations of the keep from various perspectives. The pdf includes a timeline of the keep ("Hell's Throat Timeline") that was originally published in KODT#65, p41. Kalamar Quest, SV1, Unguarded Hoard by James Mishler. Mystara-conversion guidelines by the author are available at: http://www.pandius.com/kalamar.html. It'd be great to have his conversion notes for the (at least three) other Kalamar Quests he wrote. Free download here: http://64.17.155.164/gr_files/focus15.pdf -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Clark Ashton Smith Stories CAS invented a fantasy province of France called Averoigne, which he used as the background for some of his stories. Averoigne was used by TSR as the background setting for X2. Later, elements of Averoigne were fully adopted into the Mystara setting. Although none of these stories are directly RPG material, they do provide details on Averoigne. If the notes indicate a synopsis or fragment, this means that the book does not have the full story, but contains the notes that CAS used while composing the story. Weird Tales is a magazine which featured the original prints for many CAS stories. The short stories have the information pertaining to Averoigne, and many have been printed in more than one book over the last 60 years. This list is as comprehensive as possible, though it may not be complete. Some of the information from this thread http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=682073 may be appropriate to include in the IMP, such as listings for The Companions' Islandia products. Instead of, or in addition to, the existing "implicit/explicit/compatible" and one word "location" columns, there'd ideally be a sentence or paragraph for each listing explaining its official placement or relation to Mystara, perhaps even including an exact quote of the official placement information from the product. Maybe there could be links to each product's official download at Paizo and RPG Now, and also to each product's Acaeum page, since it gives lots of information on foreign editions, cover scans, and other neat stuff (I'm not familiar with webmastering etiquette - is it impolite to link to another website like that?). Also, it'd be nice to include whatever information is available on vaporware, so including the "lost" product descriptions from Bruce Heard's "Mystara Reference Guide" (http://pandius.com/refguide.html), and Acaeum "ongoing research" about BX1, DA5, and X11: Blackheart would be useful (http://www.acaeum.com/library/research.html). |

#20zombiegleemaxSep 15, 2006 0:48:59 | I've made some progress on integrating the additions and suggestions into the IMP, which I've tentatively renamed the IMOP "Index of Mystara and OD&D Products", since it includes every OD&D product whether it's set in Mystara or not (e.g. Imagine Magazine articles on Pelinore). I posted David Keyser's Dragon and Dungeon magazine indexes on the thread so that people can make comments or additions if necessary. Shane P.S. What I'd really like to do, is have a succinct IMOP, but for each product, there'd be a link to a page devoted to that product - with a scan of the cover, publishing date, a transciption of the blurb on the back cover, a complete list of credits, and information on reprints and foreign editions (from the Acaeum). These individual product pages could also be accessible from a future Mystara Author and Artist Database. |

They don't have everything up there yet, but they have cover scans and product info on almost all of the OD&D/Mystara stuff. |

#23zombiegleemaxNov 28, 2006 23:28:33 | My hands are full with my first semester grad school. Also, I'm going through a phase where most of my "speculative worlds playtime" has been taken up with writing essays about Middle-earth* (my other love besides Mystara). I hope to recommence the IMP work (and the Mystara Q&As) eventually. Hopefully this thread will remain intact in Wizards' MMB archive until I get back to it. Shane *Actually, my work on Mystara has been helpful in my Middle-earth work. For example, like Mystara, Middle-earth has countries that are "evocative" of Real World cultures. For example: Rohan and Anglo-Saxon England; the Shire and Victorian-era Warwickshire, Dale and Viking-era Scandinavia, and so on). I've even adapted the MMB/MML terms "M-" and "RW-" for Middle-earth as "ME-" (e.g. Dunland = ME-Ireland, like Redstone = M-Ireland) and "PW-" ("Primary World" - Tolkien's term for the historical world outside of his fictional framework). Anyone who's interested in Middle-earth is welcome to check out the Middle-earth Roleplaying List archive at www.merp.com/community. The link to the archive is a few paragraphs down the page - the username is merparc and the password is merplist. Maybe my Middle-earth studies will someday be useful in my Mystara design work since, as far as I recall, the Elvish language of the Alfheim Gazetteer is inspired by (copied from?) Middle-earth's Elvish languages. . |

Theoden's Great Hall seems evocative of Hrothgar's Hall from Beowulf. Peter Jackson strengthened that impression in his portrayal of the Rohirim, particularly in architecture as well as the music from Howard's Score using the Norwegian Hardinger. Alright, M-E is cool Shane, but we need you right here! Håvard |

Peter Jackson strengthened that impression in his portrayal of the Rohirim, particularly in architecture as well as the music from Howard's Score using the Norwegian Hardinger. Well, in the fictive translation scheme Tolkien uses, where he "translates" the actual Mannish languages of the Third Age into human languages of the Sixth Age (AD 1 - AD 1945), the Mark-speech is represented as Old English, and the Northern language of the Bardings (the Dale-men and Lake-men) is represented as Old Norse. The Movies use mostly Anglo-Saxon-style arms and armor and decorative and architectural motifs for the Rohirrim. Though the events of Beowulf (the most important piece of Anglo-Saxon literature) took place in Scandinavia, the poem of course is in Old English, and was transmitted through the Anglo-Saxon tradition. At that time, the Anglo-Saxons and Norsemen were just variations of a common Germanic culture, with a shared mythology and poetic tradition, and Old English and Old Norse were (somewhat) mutually intelligible languages. So the Horse-lords are definitely most evocative of the Anglo-Saxons, though, like the Anglo-Saxons, they had some contact and influence from their north-easterly cousins the Bardings (ME-Norsemen), especially when they lived in Eotheod, their former home in northern Rhovanion; for example, Tolkien says in one of his letters that the Rohan name "Gram" (a Norse name) was borrowed from the Bardings. The hardanger fiddle was likely chosen for use in the Movies because it is an archaic folk-instrument of northern Germanic Europe, not because the Rohirrim are supposed to be especially like Norwegians (in the same way that the use of bodhrans for the Hobbit-music of the Movies doesn't mean that the Hobbits are supposed to be similar to the Irish). Alright, M-E is cool Shane, but we need you right here! How kind of you to say that :-). I do hope to get back to Mystara before too long. Shane |
