#1HuginNov 30, 2004 23:42:05 | Something I did a long time ago for my Mystara campaigns was to do up a number of different breeds of horses with five quality levels (in the manner of the horses presented in the Golden Khan of Ethengar gazetteer). Having a variety of horses was interesting to me and my players, after all, you don't have only just two weapons to chose from do you? I'm currently upgrading them to 3.5 and will post them as I do them (hopefully!). I started by having a kind of template or basis to build different horses with different characteristics. This is the list of horses that have been in my games for quite some time now: Heavy Horses Kaltstein - a strong horse bread mainly in Darokin for plowing fields. Chestnut, bay (redish), or roan (gold, brown or black w/ white hair). Percherval - a large, noble looking work horse found in Glantri known for its ease of handling (which I translate as a higher WIS). Grey, or black. Rahedan - perhaps the strongest horse on Mystara, it is found mainly in Wendar and also in Heldann, where it is often trained as a heavy war horse. Black, grey, or brown & w/ long white hair on the lower leg covering its feet. Randellyn Bay - both strong and easily handled, it's found in Alphatia. Bay w/ darker hair on back and black hair on back of its neck. Stregger - a large horse that the Hattians have found are suited well to training as war horses. Black, brown, bay chestnut, grey. Tilsdale - a rare breed found mostly in Klantyr, Glantri, that is very good for plowing and pulling. Black, grey, roan (gold, brown or black w/ white hair), bay, or brown. Medium Horse Cayuse - one of the horses used by the Atruaghin peoples, it has good balance but is also strong and well behaved. Its origins are unknown. Almost any colour, however no white markings except for below the knees or on the face. Elstrick - the horse in Darokin for pulling carts and carrigages. It has good eyesight as well as endurance and toughness. Usually reddish but can be brown or black. Guadalante - Common on the Savage Coast, it is prized for its mobility and trainability. grey, or bay & black. Kerendan - the horse of the Kerendans and of much of Thyatis. It is tough and agile. Born dark coloured, gradually changing pure white by age 4-10, usually at 7 years. 1 in 200 remain brown or black. Ythronner - a horse bread in Karameikos about a century ago using the Kerendan, but its is not quite as good, or as common. It is often used as a multi-purpose horse. Dark brown w black legs and mane to bay. Light Horse Akhal-Teke - this is the horse of the Ethengarian hordes and is well rounded in ability. It is very rare outside Ethengar. Distintive metallic golden sheen overlaying a fine haired coat coloured dun (yellowish or bluish), bay, gray, or black. Alasiyan - the high-strung horse prized greatly by the Ylari for its speed, jumping ability, and endurance in the desert. Chestnut (gold), bay (reddish), grey, or black. Antalian Cob - found in the northern climates of Norwold, Heldann, the Reaches, and northern Isle of Dawn, it is sturdy, strong, hardy, and surprisingly agile. almost any colour except a painted pattern. Arapaloosa - reknown for its strength, balance, and climbing ability among the Savage Coast region. Leopard (white w/dark blotches over hind), snowflake (spots all over, more on hind), blanket (blotches over upper hind), marble, frost. --------- - first horse to be used by the Atruaghin people, and common in Sind and the Savage Coast, it has many names; the Atruaghin's simply called it "painted". It is a good climbing horse that is (as the Atruaghins say) "always aware of what is happening around it, even before you are". Overo (solid colour w/ large uneven patches of white all over body), or tobiano (white coat w/ large uneven patches of solid colour). Ponies Cabalsaw - used as a pack animal on the Savage Coast. Almost any colour. Cruth - great pack animal for rugged terrain and used as mounts by hin that want to go off the trail. Found in Darokin, through the Shires, and into Karameikos. Brown, grey, chestnut, almost any. Ostlandic - the pony believed to have been native only to the Islands of the Ostlanders. Perhaps the pony with the greatest endurance. Almost any colour or colour combination. Thothian - almost exclusive to the the Isle of Dawn, with the exception of very wealty citizens of Thyatis or Alphatia that puschase these diminuative ponies for their young children. In behavior and loyalty, it is claimed to be like that of gentlest dog. Black, brown, chestnut, gray, or patchy. As I update the stats to 3.5 I'll also give more detail, such as height, skills, and price. I'll also show what happens when a horse gets trained for use in combat (kind of like a prestige class, but for horses! :D ). As always, comments and ideas are more than welcome. |

Does Vestland, Soderfjord and Ostland import the Rahedan from Heldann and the Kaltstein from Darokin for warfare and agriculture? Or what do they uses for such purposes? Not the Antalian cob or the Ostlandic? (I know next to nothing about horses, so I am not sure how much "lighter" a light horse is than a medium horse :D ) As I update the stats to 3.5 I'll also give more detail, such as height, skills, and price. I would guess that if magic wasn't as predominate as it is in glantri, or the horse was originally bred elsewhere, it could easily have been more widespread. It is also very likely that it is a fairly recent breed of horse that will probably spread, but slowly. Does Vestland, Soderfjord and Ostland import the Rahedan from Heldann and the Kaltstein from Darokin for warfare and agriculture? Or what do they uses for such purposes? (I know next to nothing about horses, so I am not sure how much "lighter" a light horse is than a medium horse The nations of the Northern Reaches indeed use the Rahedan (for war and peace) as the Heldannic Knights seem to import and bred a lot of Streggers for warhorses, creating a surplus of the Rahedans. This makes getting the Rahedan that much more easier for the Reaches now. As for the light / medium horse difference, it isn't much. For game purposes, generally the "heavier" a horse is, the stronger and larger, but slower and less agile it is. A great touch of colour to my campaign! That's why I did it :D . Another thing I usually have done up is a couple of stables listing what specific horses they have for sale. The type, colour, and quailty (which the PCs use a handle animal check to see if they can determine), along with the price. In most cases, the farther a horse is from its "normal range", the more expensive the price. although im missing the famous horses of the Alfheim elves Forgot completely about those! I'll have to look into that. I obviously haven't read my Ethengar Gazetteer often enough... How do these compare with the horse qualities in Gaz2 Ylaruam? The ones in the Ethengar gaz are more complete stat-wise; the Ylaruam ones only show speed (faster than the Ethengar horse) and the chances of a defect. Nice... The legs are short and heavily boned and yet has large canter strides and enormous jumping ability. They are from 64" - 68" at the shoulders and are black, brown, bay chestnut, or grey. I can understand why you were frustrated that nothing will appear in columns in this CMS - I have had the same problems trying to produce family trees and other stuff with the tabulator keypad. But whatever you did seems to work out fine and I have been able to copy-paste it to my own campaign files :D I really, really like giving the species feats! One question: You mention that the Ethengarian horse has the feat "grass-trekker" and that it gives a bonus to e.g. jump. Have you done any thinking on what sort of food these species require? Can some of the more expensive, finers breeds only survive on premium wheat or can the ponies survive on a few bits of grass on a mountainside? It seems to me that would make an immense difference, particularly when choosing which horse to outfit one's cavalry with! Keep up the good work! Jesper |

(That's how I get the pics ;) ) 4 down, 16 to go... 17 with the Alfheim horse which I haven't done before... 18 actually for lesser and greater Alfheim horses... I should shut up now... |

It is the first horse to be used by the Atruaghin people, and can also be found in Sind and as far as the Savage Coast. This horse has many names; the Atruaghins simply called it Kotla, meaning "painted", or Gyuda’n meaning “horse”. It is interesting that the Sindi word for horse is Ghoda, and that they also call the horse Chitra, which is Sindi for “painted”. This is a good climbing horse with nice stability that is (as the Atruaghins say) "always aware of what is happening around it, often before you are". The “painted” horse gets its name from the two pattern variations it can be found in; Overo, which is a solid colour with large uneven patches of white all over body, or tobiano, which is a white coat with large uneven patches of solid colour. The colour can be nearly any but is always the same across the horse’s body. This is one of the smallest of Mystara’s true horses at between 55" - 61" and its speed is not as great as other light horses. I have begun to view the horse races like cars. Some people prefer Crystler, others a Lambogini and others yet a Mercedes. Why should it be any different with mounts in a fantasy world? The only notable exceptions are among wealthy citizens of the Empires of Thyatis or Alphatia that purchase these diminutive ponies for their young children. Their origin is certainly as ancient as it is forgotten (to all save a very, very few). In behaviour and loyalty, it is claimed to be like that of the gentlest dog. Buyer beware however, the smallest of these ponies are breed by horse traders to achieve their petite size, but at the expense of everything else. This means a person could find themselves paying for superior or superb stock for a “miniature” animal, but with the attributes of a poor pony or even a nag. The standard Thothian is usually black, brown, chestnut, grey, or patchy and between 40" - 44" whereas the “miniature” Thothian that some profit-seekers have developed can mature at under 34”. Please note that all the ponies have been updated as well; I calculated their loads as a large animal instead of a medium animal, but it's all fixed now. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean the list includes every horse breed there is on Mystara. I'm going to do a slight variation of the Cruth mountain-pony for the Dwarves of Rockhome. There's also the lesser and greater Alfheim horses that I'm going to do up. Hopefully the next thing to post is the "War Mount" template. I actually used a level progression (which I can't seem to find at the moment) back when I played OD&D rules and was therefore going to "convert" that into a 5-level PrC for horses. But now that I've really looked into it, I think it might get a little too powerful (10 HD horse anyone?). Anyway, once a horse has successfully been trained for combat riding (through the handle animal check in the PHB), the template gets added to the horse. Rather basic really but I'll see what I can do to spice it up a bit. |

I thought I might as well share them so that if anyboby wanted to make some other breeds it would be a little easier. I actually noticed an error with the speed figures of the Cabalsaw Pony while doing this, so they have been corrected. I haven't had the chance to sit down and do the Alfheim Horse yet but I did do some reading on it. Two facts stand out; 1) It is a small horse that the gaz calls a "pony". 2) It is speculated that the horse is related to the Steppe horses of Ethengar, which is also called a "pony" in gaz 5, but refered to as a "light horse" in gaz 12. I'm inclined to have the Alfheim related to the Enthengarian horse, but of a smaller size; small enough to be a pony. I think a pony is more the elves style anyway, possibly bred that way from the original stock by the elves. |

It translates as “the swift horse of the Star Watcher”, referring of course to their king of legend, King Mealiden. The first is the conditioning of the horse to accept a rider and respond to his prompts. This takes about three weeks and a successful Handle Animal check (DC 15). This allows normal Ride checks on the horse. Without this training, just getting on the horse takes a Ride check (DC 20), and staying in the saddle also requires Ride checks (DC 15). This adds around 15% - 25% to the value of the horse. Once the horse has been trained for riding, the horse can be conditioned for the chaotic enviroment of battle and for more aggressive use of it's hooves. This also takes three weeks and a successful Handle Animal check (DC 20). This increases the horse's value again by about 10% - 15%. This training has several effects on the horse; - Melee attacks with hooves are no longer considered to be secondary and therefore do not suffer the -5 penalty to hit (add +5 to the listed melee attack bonus). Damage also now receives the full strength modifier. - Can now use a bite attack as a secondary attack form at a -5 to hit and one-half strength modifier applied to damage. - Fight with Warhorse Ride checks can now be attempted to attack with both the horse and a weapon. - Control Mount in Combat Ride checks no longer need to be made for normal combat situations. |

In years past I used a kind of "class" for horses including levels (5 in total) and I had seriously thought about doing the same thing for them when I changed over to 3E. After alot of reading, thinking, and rethinking, I felt it was best to kept things simple and straight forward with existing rules. This was actually my second time working it out; I did it last night only to loss it all when I tried to submit it. It was 12:30 in the night so I gave up and went to bed! You could give some of the more "spirited" individual horses a circumstance penalty to the handle animal check raising the DC to "break" him. I bet the character will think a little more of his horse than just something to carry stuff. |

A horse listed as common is a dominate breed in that nation and sells for roughly the prices listed in their descriptions. Uncommon horses are found in these nations, but are fewer and generally anywhere from 20% - 50% more than the listed prices. In nearly all cases, any horse may be found for sale in any nation, but may go for as much as 50% - 100% more than listed if you are able to find one. (Note this list is only a "first draft" and may change)

The Bombfar, which in Dwarven means “huge ruiner”, was bred for size and strength by the dwarves for use exclusively in battle. They will not lower their great battle horse to the humility of pulling wagons or ploughing fields; they have oxen for such tasks. The breeding of this horse is carefully controlled by the Dwarves, but over the centuries, some of these horses have found their way out of Rockhome. Whether by coincidence, or because the dwarves are partial to the colour of earth, these horses are always brown; various shades of brown but brown none the less. The Bombfar also has long hair covering its hooves and long manes. They also have a distinctive white marking down the center of the face which the dwarves refer to as the vein of silver; the larger the marking, the more desirable the horse. These are large horses standing at 66” – 74” in height at the shoulders and therefore the dwarves utilize a rope ladder attachment on their saddles to mount these warhorses. The horses are described as "beautiful white horses" and are sold by the Traladarans in Riflian to the elves there, who like that type of horses. Any comment on what race theses white horses are? I thought they might be Kerendan, but do they breed wild in Karameikos or are we talking about a rare local race of horses? Besides, Kerendans only turn white later in life, does anyone know how old a wild horse has to be before it is to old to break and train? :-) Jesper |

My brother has a new character that was introduced just last Tuesday. He is actually related (although through marriage) to another of his characters and was raised by Vyallia elves in eastern Karameikos as a forester. Anyway, he was given a white Kerendan horse by an elf as a young man. He's now 23 and has had the horse for around 8 years. Back to B10, I know I'll be using the Kerendan connection IMC. It would be very plausable that over the years some horses break free and the ones that end up in the forests would be hard to find and re-capture. These could have formed wild herds in Karameikos although they would be exceptionally rare. Perhaps the terrain around The Moor, being less wooded and more hilly, makes it easier for the Traladarans to round-up some of these horses. Of course, they could be a seperate bred unto their own, perhaps related to the Kerendans. |

From different sources, I gather that the Callari are quite accomplished horse breeders. If they have been buying wild white kerendans for all these centuries ( they are settled in central Karameikos since 800bc or so according to some sources, and since around year 0 according to others - IMC I chose the older date) then the breed should now be quite unique, as the elves probably like other qualities than the kerendans. The breed could be a relatively new breed that has only been around for a few hundred years, OR, they have had it a long time; long enough that the Callari have been able to develop their own breed from the Kerendan horse. I'm glad you're enjoying the thread. Back a little further in this thread are the 'base stats' for each category of horse. If you wanted to, you could create a breed just for those elves. Shortly after the founding of Alfheim (to the elves a couple of centuries are not all that long), this king was introduced to chevalls from the Traldar lands to the south. The elves created a marvellous forest, but the horses that inhabited the steppes that were once in its place were not adjusting to the new environment, and thus their reproductive rates were falling. To help the elves with their dwindling herd of ponies, the unicorns and chevalls began selective cross-breeding that lead to the modern elven pony. The True Alfheim pony is more properly classified as a magical beast, resulting from the unicorn and chevall blood that runs through their veins. They also share a semi-telepathic link with the elves. These are short-legged, quick, mobile and highly prized for their “intelligence” and ability to fight on their own. The pony’s coat displays its relationship to the Akhal-Teke; it is fine haired with some metallic golden sheen and generally coloured bay, brown, or black. The tail of the Rochuin Giltirn is also like the Akhal-Teke, being silky but longer. Its height is shorter than those ‘Rochuin Giltirn’ found outside Alfheim, usually ranging from 48” – 52”. You'll notice that I actually made it a magical beast, something I felt was appropriate given it's ancestrial heritage, semi-telepathic link, and 'uncanny intelligence'. I hope people agree. Any thoughts out there as to how their telepathic link works? I'm thinking that maybe an elf can send it basic commands mentally (any command a horse is normally eligable to learn as a 'trick'). Perhaps any pony less than normal quality (i.e. only Int 2) must be trained as per the normal rules while the others can perform them innately. |
